Tying flies
#1
Ice flies that is. Don't tell those boys over on the General board one of my secerets to fun Ice fishing. Last night I sat down at the vise and tied up a few new ice patterns and today I used them up at Mantua one of them Kicked!!! Any one else tying their own ice flies?

Materials:

Hook: 1/64 oz. chartreuse jig head
Underwrap: fine led wire
Thread: 6/0 chartreuse
Tail: 2 chartreuse sillicon legs
Body: chartreuse sillicon legs
Wings: 2 chartreuse sillicon legs

Tie the tail like a prince nymph the length of the shank use the remaining legs to wrap the body leaving enough to make wings tie off behind the head and tie down one leg on each side of the body trim to length of body.
Simple and effective!

I have tied some in the past, just messing around, but I have never had any success with them. I am also curious as to how you would fish them???

SBW: keep trying them. I have as much success or more than any other of the Goofy stuff we use out on the ice. When fish are picky I go to the hand tied.

tubefisherman: yes and no. most of my trout catches were sitting it still. But I did a lot of jigging.

Today I have been tying these in white,fl.Orange,Black. Last night I tied some that look like Foxee jigs, since they don't make them anymore.

I chuckled to myself when you mentioned you are tying some to represent Foxee jigs. That is exactly what I have messed around with tying in the past. My favorite Foxee jig is the solid white with the pink head and pink tail. I have only of of those left and I am afraid to use it for fear of loosing it.

Have you ever had any success with sow bug or shrimp patterns ice fishing? There is a local reservoir that the fish are chuck full of small grey what look like sow bugs.

I have tried a couple of different patterns and colors, but I have never caught anything on them.

Funny!! pink/white body is the one I was tying.Did Chartreuse a couple days ago. Tied a couple Chartrese scuds on jig heads for crappie at willard. Hare's ears and Prince nymphs on jig heads are good at Mantua. remember jig heads hang upside down so tie accordingly.

I'll get a camera and take some picks.

Gummie would be good looks like a Rat finki.

Thats what I had pictured in my mind from your first post.
Would work well if tied with led under wrap,or tied on a jig head.

Thanks for posting the pictures.

Great idea with the silicon legs for the body! I never could figure out how to quite mimick the body on the foxee jigs. I will definitely tie some up and try them.

Thanks for the info about the Gummy Grub. I can see how it could be very effective under the ice.
