with a few posts discussing electric auger heads as an option I started looking into it. After looking at the icegater my father in law and I think we could actually make a similar device at a much reduced cost. Has anyone tried this before? If so how did it work out? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

hi ,i think that the hardest part is the transmission /gearbox ,i would use a cordless impact driver like a dewalt coupled to a 30 to 1 or 40 to 1 gearbox and coupled to maybe an old handauger . but the sky is the limit. good luck felix

You could mabey use one off a junked lawn tractor and a push button starter switch. If it runs backwards just reverse the poles on the battery connection.
