Took my first ice fishing trip to Pineview this morning. Similar to others, I caught lots of dink perch and a few that were large enough to take home. Besides a trip to Wisconsin last year, I have not really done any musky fishing. I decided to set one rod up with a 5 inch tube jig tipped with perch meat and a steal leader. I was using an automatic jigger with this rod while I was perch fishing. Unfortunately I didn't get a single bite all day long with my larger set up. I did however get a big bite on my perch rig. I was using a swedish pimple and four pound mono. I got a bite and set the hook into what felt like a rock. It stayed on the bottom for a bit shaking its head. I think it took a few minutes before it really knew it was hooked. It did go on a few runs but maybe only 50 yards. I was really surprised after I saw it that it didn't spool me. It really just stayed on the bottom
I had my cell phone on me and fought it for almost 10 minutes. I yelled over to some guy to help out and he grabbed my lip gripper. I got the musky to the hole a few times and its head was larger than the hole. I realized I had little chance of getting this one. I thought about trying to get its head to point up to the hole but with four pound line that was impossible. I ended up reaching into the hole but it wouldn't open up its mouth. I had to put the lip gripper around the front of the lips and when I did that it shook its head threw the lip gripper and broke my line.
I was happy I at least got to see it. And the only reason I had any chance at all was because it was hooked at the very front of the lip. I could see my lure sticking out of its mouth when it was sitting under the hole. My buddy got sick so he couldn't make it or I would have taken a picture of its head through the hole. I knew it was a lost cause but still exciting.
Hey K2Muskie, if you happen to catch a musky with a swedish pimple in its lip, can you measure it so I know how big it was? [
