Raystown Spillway
#1
Just wondering if anyone ever fished the raystown dam spillway in the winter? I hear that it is supposed to be a really good winter fishery. I was told that you chances of getting a monster 50lb class striped bass are good when they open the gates. Same goes with big brown trout. So if anyone has any experience with this please chime in and do tell. I plan on takein the trip over some weekend since its only about an hour from my place. It will be good to help break the cabin fever that i have been dealing with.

Let me know if ya go and how you do. I got cabin fever bad also.LOL Im going to maryland to the bass expo this coming weekend so that will help the cabin fever a little

I was told that the only time to fish the spillway is during the winter. Reason being is any other time the water there is highly pressured and there is alot of traffic with people butting tubes and kayaks in at that point. I will let you know when i go and how i do.

I am gonna be going to the Philadelphia and Harrisburg sports shows this year to help out with my cabin fever. Do u plan on going to either of them?

Jeffgorecki ! Looks like your from my area> ever go to the local shows at Wellsville or Dillsburg ? Also if you haven't already > Pinchot spillway can host big swipers and walleye as well as Redman lake. I 'll be at the wellsville show with my lake maps in March and this Feb.6 at Leesport sportsmen show. As for Raystown i thought it was around march that they let the water out of the gates.

I went down last weekend, didn't have any luck. I was told it was a good place for rainbows this time of year, so I had small trout stuff. But while I was down there, I was talking to a local who said people were catching walleye, stripers and lake trout on the point when you walk around the power building. I can't say about baits or lures, didn't say. As far as my experience goes, I only ever fished spring down there trying to get a few rock bass for the frying pan.

Really, well thats good to know. I kinda gave up on that thought because i figured there would be so much snow down there that it would be hard to walk around? maybe i will go down within the next few weeks if a get a free moment. Im sure this year will be good down there once the snow starts to melt. we got a ton of it up here in Portage. They should be opening the gates alot this spring i would assume.

I have fished the Spillway a lot, but not much in the winter. The best time I've found is in the early spring. I've caught lots of bass and walleyes in there. I caught a 20" Smallmouth outta there last spring. The walleyes are typically under 20" there, but I have seen some caught around the 22-23" range. I've also seen stripers and lake trout in there, but haven't had any luck catching them out of there. Spring is definitely good for bass and walleye...

I've just never had any luck there at all, probably been there a dozen times in the boat and only caught 2 smallmouth right around 12 inches and one 13" perch. I have better luck at the waterfall catchin Rock Bass all day. But your not aloud to fish there,,lol.
I,ve tried Yellowcreek with an all day dryspell, so I mostly go to Wilmore, normally catch anywhere from 20 to 30 crappie with half being keepers.
I havent found a Local lake yet where I can catch alot of Bass, doesnt matter if they are keepers or not just more fun when ya catch stuff.
FYI I work at a tv station, let me know if you want to advertise your lures on our website, I can get ya in touch with our web guy

jnagel32, thanks for the info! Im gonna try to fit that in between my Erie trips and going up to glendale for Pike. I was thinking about trying it down there this saturday but with all the snow we got i may just wait another week or 2. If you make it down there before i do please fill me in on the details.

tvfoxdude, looks like im gonna scratch that place off my list lol. If im bored one day i still my give it a try though. But at least now i don't need to feel bad about not given it a chance.

I go to yellowcreek a good bit but the past 2 years really sucked! i have no idea whats going on over there. I could go there a few years back and pound the crap out of them all day. Now im lucky to get a nibble. O well maybe it will come back this year.

I don't know about you but i think that the bass fishing at wilmore is great. I can go up there and catch bass all day long. I never keep bass cause i don't think that they really taste that good, plus i would rather go back and catch them again. I never tried it for crappie, im not really a crappie fisherman but i heard that it is really good up there for that.

I will keep you in mind for the advertising, but i have a feeling that it will be pricey. We are just getting started and money is tight at the moment. I am deff interested down the road though once we make a few bucks.

I've actually never ever caught a bass at wilmore. but if you troll right up the middle with a minnow in late summer, more toward the banks early in the year on one of your lowest trolling speeds you'll hammer crappie all day long.
And you'd be suprised at the cost, at all tv stations, they are looking for ANY revenue. if you want me to get some prices for ya Web or on-air send me a email, and i'll see what I can do. tvfoxdude@yahoo.com

Im gonna try that out. how deep down do you put your minnow? I got some of these things that i make called Turbo Tail Magnum spinner Baits, if i troll them i think i would do well with up there. I have them on the website. I do great with them up glendale lake for crappie and bass so i don't see why they would not work at wilmore. Let me know how you are rigging your miniow and i will give that a try as well, that is if you don't mind.

All i do is hook a medium to small minny thru the lips, I put a 1/8 ounce sinker about 2 feet up. The fish finder shows pretty much all of them right around 10 feet. I've tried just sitting there with a depth floater but that doesnt seem to work as well. The best spot I've found is just at the first right hand bend, just start doing circles from that point over to the little coveand bacl around again.
The last time I went last year I had 2 minnow buckets with 3 dozen minnys each and ran out in about 4 hours. If ya just like catchin fish I think you'll have alot of fun
