What ever works for you, I'd say. If it's a spinning rod it'll still work as a casting rod. Awkward though with the large eyelets reversed upward? Might consider picking up a correct sized but cheap casting rod for it...

Yup you can most of my buddy's still fish there ugly sticks that way as when walmart fist started carrying the 12 foot ones here they had them mismarked for months. they were spinning poles but for 29.95 who cared [cool]

Oh i forgot to add casting poles seem to have a longer butt so it its a tad short go and find a piece of abs or pvc pipe that will fit snugly over the handel makes it a little more comfy to cast

I use GLoomis spinning rods with Shimano 251 or 401 TE's for bottom bouncing for steelies and salmon. I find the larger eyes offer less drag and the rods cast farther then the same rod in a casting model. I've landed 1000's of fish and have never had a problem with the reversed "spine" that you hear mentioned. Great set up!

A friend bought a big baitcaster for cats and the reel was not friendly to him. He put a big spinning reel on the rod and does just fine with it. He might lose a little distance, but adds more weight to compensate.

MMDon, That is what I heard. A guy at Sportsmans said it was spined wrong. Since I posted this I have talked to several guys that have spinning rods and casting reels. They said they like the shorter butt for fighting Sturgeon. The longer butt is awkward. I have only caught a couple of sturgeon but I do remember that the casting rod I used was long and it was,,, awkward. This will be my heavy cat rod and maybe a Steelhead or salmon rod.
I am going to give it a try I guess if it breaks I could test the warranty. Ron

I have over 20 Loomis rods rigged that way and have never had one break. My Loomis Salmon and Steelie rods all have the longer butts. I also found the 12' ugly sticks to cast further with the spinning style rod vs. the casting rod using casting reels. I did cut the butt on the Ugly Stik down and gimble the end for a fighting belt. It makes it much more user friendly to cast big weight and fight large fish from the bank.
