Cold Water Wadin'
#1
I know it's too early, but I couldn't resist the urge to try and fool a wally this morning. Since it was Saturday, I expected there to be a few people. But with a lot of people heading high for hard deck and the the drizzling freezing rain, maybe I could find a spot in line and make a cast or 2.

Weird drive in. no Eagles, no deer, no roosters? Seems odd to me, there must already be a ton of people down here......

Nope. not a single rig parked in the road. Am I really that lucky? put on waders and grabbed my gear like it was the race of a lifetime, but there wasn't anyone around to hurry and beat in the water. Maybe it was the excitement? i got ready and ran to the edge of the water in such a hurry, that i was a little winded and had to stop and take a deep breath. why am i rushing? !!

I did not double rig like most guys do, but my first choice was a multicolored grub, mostly greens and yellows in it.
Cast after cast....nothing. eventually broke that one off and went to a black 5 inch curly tail grub. This will do it!
First cast got hung up on the other side of the river. But I managed to get it free, for a while. Repeated this scenario 6-7 times. mutiple colors, multiple styles, multiple sizes. I did only bring larger baits. Maybe I should have brought something a little smaller in case the WB were in there. But I have caught the WB on the larger size baits in the summer.

After my third hour of standing waist to belly deep in the cold water and being rained on, I finally got chilled and decided to call it off.

Best day of fishing in a long time. I was actaully able to work my bait in the current. Cast where I wanted. Walk to where I wanted. I tried a lot of different baits, slow, fast and at a multitude of depths. Got a few bumps, but nothing that I would consider a bite. Man what a good morning! None of that, soon to be, shoulder to shoulder, cast and retrieve that will start in the next few weeks.

I was going to title this post "no deer, no roosters, no ducks, no eagles, no people, NO FISH" but I did hear a rooster or 2 cackle, but didn't see them. 2 Goldeneye buzzed me when I was about 75 yds out towards the ice. Didn't see the usuall flock of late season Pins that I normally do. On the drive out, I did spot 4 eagles in an old snag tree. Nothing like the 100-150 birds that were down there last year. but is early.

I am probably re taw ded for even thinking of going this early... I know why there wasn't more people down there now...

If anyone goes down there, the bank is washed a little and steep. the "tree" is out 20 feet in the water (level is high) and I seem'd to have found some new obstacles in places I have never got snagged before. Ice was 150-200 yds straight out, but only 15-20 yds behind you.
Be careful with the road, it's already a little beat up and pot holley, but not bad. And if you see that 8 ft iceberg that kept circling me in the current...say hi.

All in fun, yeah? I mean, what if somehow you'd been the first guy to get into em this year and caught a bunch?
