So I went fishing at Scofield last night. Definitely a waste of my time for all the stupid chub I caught. Thought something was weird when I kicked out the ice from a hole that was drilled earlier that day and there was a perch in it. I don't remeber perch being part of the family of fish in Scofield. Are there perch there? or was this brought there to be used as illegal bait?

There are not any perch in Scofield. The fish you saw was probably brought to the lake by a fisherman to use as bait. You were correct in saying that bringing perch to Scofield to use as bait is illegal. Perch can only be used as bait in specified waters listed in the 2010 Fishing Guidebook. The waters where it is legal to use perch for bait have perch populations already established.

[cool][#0000ff]We can only HOPE it was a violation of bait regulations rather than a bucket biologist situation. I would not be a bit surprised to see perch show up in Scofield. Lots of tanglers who think they know better than DWR what species should be in their favorite lakes. And, perch have mysteriously shown up in several other formerly trout only waters. Crappies too. [#0000ff]In short, perch are not a recognized species for Scofield but it is not out of the realm of possibility that some have been illegally dumped in there.[/#0000ff]

It would definately be bad if someone put perch in schofield. Not a good mix for that lake. Lets hope that it was only an illegal bait.

That is no joke in regards to perch ruining a good trout fishery. When stationed in North Dakota we had a great trout fishery (Cardbury Lake). We would catch 4, 5 and 6 lb trout frequently in this lake when someone introduced perch. The next summer you couldn't get a trout to look at your bait and if it did it would fight 1000 dinks for your morsel. For you non-believers I do have pictures but would have to scan since they were taken in the late 80's.
