This is from Reed Harris, Department of Natural Resources. I had asked him where I could get the statistics to all the data the DWR is collecting while harvesting the carp from UL.
thanks for the email...knowing that researchers are reluctant to let go of their basic data until they have had a chance to analyze it over a broader perspective, I will copy a number of the folks that are collecting the information and we will see if there are some aspects of the work we can discuss or make public...I think DWR would like to take this information out to the Utah Lake Fishing Forum once they can look at the trends and factor in all the variables and changes that are occurring as Bill changes net size, effort and soon shifts to open water...the biologists will probably be reluctant to let out much information because it causes some speculation which can get out and then be hard to turn around once trends take a different direction...Having said all that I am excited too that we are finding a pretty good number of our native June sucker (5 or 6) in a seine haul as well as a number of sport fish (walleye and largemouth bass)...if we can keep these catches up for the next few months, we are all hopeful that some assumptions can be made...getting data in a useable form is often tedious as well...basic data sheets can be misleading too as effort, gear size and seasonal variables all change, as Bill moves around the Lake, so we have to ferret out why specifics of a catch occurred...sometimes you can go talk to the biologists and they can talk about the day's catch, but they would be the first to caution you about what it means. Maybe we can plan a future meeting to go over some findings, by-catch losses and have a general discussion. After DWR reports on the project, basic data can probably be made available if you're still interested...thanks for following and we will look for an appropriate venue to discuss and share with you information that has been collected...
