Congrats on your first trip to Pelican. That lake is a lot of fun. I bet your wife had fun showing you up. Those are some nice gills and great photos. Thanks for the report.

Glad you all had a good time at Pelican, I'm sure it won't be your last. The wife and I go at least once every winter, and have a great time. Thanks for sharing and glad I could help.

when you fillet a fish and you see a yellow spot in the meat that is a worm, I have heard the pelican gills 50%??? have them, I guess they don't make you sick? not sure I want to eat worm though??? thought you could give me some king of idea how many have them....thanks

[cool][#0000ff]The "yellow grubs" formerly found in a high percentage of bluegills and bass from Pelican have dropped way off. Very few fish have them now, and those that do seldom have more than a few. They are a harmless flesh parasite that look unappetizing but will not infest humans...especially after cooking. If you don't like them they are easily removed with the point of a knife.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]These parasites are in fish as a part of a cycle. That cycle is also dependent upon birds or snails and if there is a change in the overall ecology of a lake it can increase or decrease the amount of the parasites that find their way into the fish. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Most Pelican "regulars" have commented that they have seen a lot less of the little nasties in the past two years.[/#0000ff]

I filleted our fish (40 gills) and 12 bass and only found grubs in a couple gills and 1 bass if I remember correctly and I tossed them in the trash. That was on our trip in Jan.

OH, man! You're killing me! [:p]
Actually, I'm really happy for you, and glad you hit it right on your first trip.
I was so disheartened after my last trip I haven't even hit the ice since, (and been busy) and now you went and nailed it like this... guess I better head back out.
Hope you had a blast.

ya it was way better than i expected! the first day we only caught 15 between 3 of us and the second day we caught over 55 between 3 of us so it was awsome small grub jigs with a little fluttering tail with wax worm or night crawler is what we used

I guess I'll be headed that way my self next Friday, some friends wanted to go that have never ice fished much, so I guess we will hit Pelican 1 day and Starvation the next. I've never fished Pelican this late in the year so hopefully I can put them on some fish.[fishin]
