so saturday night i had to drive to island park and pick up my buddy vern so he could go with me to salmon.when i got there he was sober so he wanted to drive so we went back down to rexburg and cut over to mudlake we were passing through mudlake a little after 1:00am where we got pulled over by a state trooper because he had somebody else pulled over and when we went out around him to give him space we didnt use a blinker. then he made sure he gave vern sobriety tests well he passed so we went on our way passing 2 more state troopers in mudlake with people pulled over. apparanltey there is some dui probs in mudlake. we arrived at owlcreek early so we took a nap until first light took the boat to the other side i didnt touch a single fish until 11:00 am i hooked a nice male on my brand new bait casting set up he jumped 4 times the first one was about 4 feet in the air . from then on to 1:00pm i caught two more hens my buddy caught one wild hen and a hatchery hen also. then from 1:00pm to 2:00pm they shut off the pod must have pushed up river. so we gathered up our stuff rowed the boat back across and went to meet up with a friend of ours that was camped at dutch oven. when we got there it was packed at least 20 people fishing it. we found our friend and walked down to him as we got down there we noticed he had a fish on and so did 3 other fisherman. i guess it had been like that all day people we talked to said the had been having anywhere from 20 to 50 fish days just fishing dutch oven the fish are held up there right now just holding until they can make the next push up river. so i set up my rod and started fishing again on the upper part of the dutch oven about my third cast i hooked and landed another hen in the heavy water she felt like a brute she was the biggest fish i had landed that day though. my buddy vern also landed another hatchery hen. i happened to snag some roe colored trout beads from one of my buddys wich is good cause all i have heard about is trout beads for steelhead. and the people we were fishing next to said they had caught 50 fish that day using nothing but them. so i switch out my blck worm and silver corkie and set up the trout bead 3rd cast landed a nice male. and i was done for the day good thing to i was tired. all 5 fish a lnded that day were hatchery i didnt get a picture of the last male i caught because i just leaned down with p;iers and released him i was to tired to screw around with him. oh also i never lost a single fish either everything i hooked i landed. so there are pictures of 4 of the five fish i landed and 2 of the 3 that vern landed it was an amazing day and the weather was awesome it had to have got up in the 50's i was just wearing a long sleeve t-shirt all day and was very comfortable.
so as far as the baitcasting rod goes i love it and i cant beleive it took me this long to get into purchasing one. its like fishing with butter! and g-loomis makes a great steelhead rod and you can feel every thing the difference between fish and bottom is like night and day even though i still think they are over priced.

Sounds like you had a good time I'm heading up there tomorrow. And was wondering if you could tell me where duch oven is from owl creek. I usually fish owl creek but would like to fish diffrent spots

Very good report. This is my busyiest time of year so I have never got into steelheading. I am glad that everyone is getting out and doing well.
I did try steelhead fishing many times as a teenager. Back then the average count was like 11-21hours per fish. Maybe the new technology is making it a little easier and the runs are better.

Glad you broke the new rod in on the first trip. Decent looking fish. Where are the big ones? Guess I am going to have to head up there and try again. I just wish they would start moving up a little farther so I do not have to drive so far.

Were the people next to you drift fishing the trout beads or using a float? I’m curious if anyone drift fishes with the beads? I ended up buying some beads, and two weeks ago i had good results with them below a bobber. [cool]

they were drift fishing them just bottom bouncing thats how i landed the one on the bead i caught!

chrome i have seen 2 diffrent ways to rig the beads up. one is just like you would a fly or anything else and the other is suspended inbetween your fly and lead. i would love to learn how to do it the second way because from what i have been told is it gives it a more realistic look. which way did you rig them?

My secrets out chrome_junky!! haha, fishing with beads can be amazing a week and a half ago fishing a popular hole i hooked up 24 times and landed quite a few between 3 of us fishing with beads there was over 50+ fish hooked that day, I rig them the "fly fishermen" way which is the more natural way.. but some people just rig a single bead above a hook about 2 1/2 inches and slide a tooth pick in it so it dont move and yes bottom bouncing or bobber fishing it works amazing, i use a double rig set up which is about foot and ahalf leader with a bead tied on about 2 inches above the hook with a tooth pick so the bead dont slide then another leader tied from bottom of the hook of the first bead setup to another bead 2 inches above a hook again with the tooth pick so the bead dont slide, ive caught fish both on the bottom and on the top bead, last week at Dutch oven a guy came over and told me "you know those are going to be outlawed ive never seen some body catch so many steelhead in my life"

Yeah steelhead kid i have used that method the only problem is if you get a snag on your bead instead of the bead sliding it just breaks your line, I dont use the trout beads ive been using odd colors ive been finding at the craft stores, also there was a fly fishermen in stanley last year using a rubber leg looking thing instead of a toothpick he said some where in boise sells them I would love to get ahold of them.

I think the russians were the first to actual use the bead setup, in alaska they call it "flossing" and 90% of the russians do it.

What size beads do you like best for steelhead? I ordered some 8mm and 10mm. Hope those sizes will be about right.

Maybe drifting the bead you "floss" some but under a float no way......... Actually the bead was developed in Alaska to immitate the eggs of spawning salmon floating down the river. The reason for pegging the bead above the hook is so when the rainbow trout in AK grab the bead they dont mortally hook themselves by swallowing the bead, the hook is pinned on the outside of the mouth.
