Steely Madness 3/29-3/30
#1
I just got back from a trip with my 8 year old boy and he is hooked now too... Monday I landed 23 steelhead the majority of which were wild fish. I had to fish until 730 pm to finally get that last keeper. from six until 730 I caught 8 wild fish before catching that 5th keeper. I also didn't have a net so I would have to tail the fish in the shallows and lost a few keepers that a net would have got. They are definately strong fish they kinda went nuts when I would try grab them. my boy got to reel in 4 fish on the flyrod, and already is talking about getting his own along with waders ect. The rains have made the river come up. This morning it was 6 inches or so higher than yesterday. It seemed to slow things a bit. I fished from about 900 am to 1100 and hooked 9 fish 5 of which I landed. 3 of those were wild fish and 2 keepers one of the keepers was hooked by the fin so Sadly had to be turned back. It was a blast. I hope things just keep getting better as more fish make their way upstream. The weather is suppose to be rain and snow all week so I'm sure the river will continue to rise. Where I was fishing there were about 20 -25 other guys and everyone seemed pretty decent and curtious. There were alot of fish being caught. the jig guys and bobber fisherman seemed to be picking up fish regularly. The biggest fish I saw landed was about a 32 inch hatchery fish. My biggest fish was 28 inches. Here are a few pics of the trip.

Your report makes me want to go again and leave the drift rod at home. I really want to land a steelhead on the fly rod. So far I haven't had the confidence to even use a fly rod for steelhead but you probably did as well or better than the drift or float guys.

Steelfisher, I would say do it!!! I'm still a newby to steelheading and don't pretend to know all that much. But from what I can see flyfishing for steelhead is deadly. I wasn't the only one hooking up repeatedly on the flyrod others were catching really consistantly too.

I will give it a try. I just need to figure out the type of water that is best for flyfishing. Some of the areas we fish are too deep and swift to fly fish.

The kid is a great photographer too! That is awesome! I'd love to take my 9 year old to get into that kind of steelie action. I flyfish for them as well but got my butt handed to me last weekend(4 out of our roup of 5 only caught one fish in two days!) That can be tough for an adult let alone a 9 yr old. I must be on the wrong part of the river. Congrats on stellar outing with the kid!

I was running one of the thingamabobbers strike indicators the largest one. I rigged it 6-7 feet above my first globug then 24 inches of 1x tippet to my 2nd globug. My weight was a sp5 and I put it 12 inches above my first globug. The water was 6-8 feet deep and I was wading out to mid thigh. I also fished very fast water that was 1-3 feet deep and was suprized to pick up fish there. But thats were I hooked and lost several b- run fish. Between there size and the fast water I couldn't seem to land them. Talk about getting almost spooled. They would make 80-100 ft runs in under 1 second. I was in awe of there power. I thought at first it was just them using the current but then they would turn and do the same thing directly upstream, Incredible!!

Do you mind sharing where you were? I have 3 kids under 11 that I would love to take to do this but wouldn't have the slightest idea where to go. The spot you were at looks very kid friendly.

Funny, I have been in Idaho my whole life and mainly a flyfisherman for the better part of 25 years and I have never been steelhead fishing in Idaho. My pops was just not into it, so I never tried it.

PM me if you would like to keep it under wraps.

Great looking fish! Thanks for the report. Can't wait to get back up there and slay them again! It's been 4 days and i'm starting to get the jittery thinking about those slimers. That is awesome you got your son into that many fish that really makes it fun! Can't decide if i want to brave the storm the next few days or save my gas for next weekend!

Question. Do you think it would or could be possible to hook and land a Steelhead on a 5wt or a 6wt fly rod without breaking you rod??

I landed a few in the 5-6 pound range last year on a 5wt (what a ride!) but finally had my butt handed to me when I hooked a big 'ole B-run. Played him for 20 minutes and never got him to even turn his head or look up- then he broke my heart. I went out and bought an entry level 8wt when I got back to town.
