Extra Stocking in May for Trout Anglers
#1
As most trout anglers are aware, many waters that are normally stocked in February by the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources did not get stocked this year because of nearly continuous snowfall and poor road conditions. Some streams could not be stocked until late March. As a result, state hatchery employees held these fish in the hatcheries longer than normal. Because hatchery trout are fed regularly under ideal growing conditions, the state's trout program now has additional poundage of trout for stocking. According to Wildlife Resources Section Chief Curtis I. Taylor, "This additional poundage means it will be a banner year for the state's trout anglers."

Enough extra poundage is available to allow extra stocking in May of all the monthly-stocked waters. Monthly-stocked waters are more widely distributed across the state, allowing for enhanced angling opportunities in more waters. This will be done by adding more fish to the remaining scheduled stocking or, where necessary, by making separate runs.

Anglers can follow daily trout stockings by calling the Hunting and Fishing Hotline at 304-558-3399 or by going online to www.wvdnr.gov/Fishing/Stocking/DailyStock.shtm.
