I realize that this probably gets asked a lot. I'm originally from Idaho, but have since moved down to South Salt Lake area. I love to fish for trout, but really struggling to find areas close by.
Just wondering if any could give me some direction to lakes, reservoirs, streams, or rivers that are close to SLC. I'm talking about "go fishing after work" close. I've managed to find/go to Dell Reservoir, but really hate to pay $5 a day to go fishing there. Any other ideas?
Thank you all. Sorry if this is a repeat question, I really did try to search for it first.

You can find some trout action at Silver lake up Big Cottonwood Canyon at brighton ski resort for free.
Mill Creek canyon has some fun holes. but i think you have to pay 2 bucks to go up the canyon or something like that.
If you venture up past little dell resv same road just keep driving you will end up at East Canyon resvoir.
OR you can go south on I-15 to hit the Lower Provo River before it flows into Utah Lake.
Get a Map of the Utah valley, Salt Lake Valley, and study them over for some good rivers.
OR you can always go to one of the community ponds where it is a put and take situation, trout are plenty and you have a chance at some catfish and bass in WIllow Park Pond just off about 5400 south and 1200 West. in that area. go to the utah department of wildlife website and look up "community fisheries" there is a pond in North Salt lake, Willow Pond, and one out around 106th south someplace. here is a link.

It has a search for one near you link that leads you to a map of Utah. zoom in on the area you want....good luck and welcome to UTAH and the BFT boards!!!

I personally would drive the extra distance and go up big or little cottonwood canyons to fish the river/stream. The only problem is they might still be too high and fast. However one of my best days fishing was up little cottonwood canyon when the stream was almost too high to cross. Still, the brookies loved whatever I was presenting to them and it turned out to be a fantastic day. The fish are a little bigger up big cottonwood canyon. So I guess the question is do you want to target browns or brookies.

Yes, ditto on big cottonwood canyon. Higher up the canyon the water gets flatter and slower, which is ideal for dry fly fishing, though I have caught them on gold panther martins and seen them taken on bait sucha s worms and salmon eggs. The best spots are right before spruces campground, which is just a bit before the aforementioned silver lake
