Not too far below Krassel RS on the South Fork of the Salmon River is a fish counter. I have been led to believe that data from the counter can be accessed on line, but I can't figure out how to get access to it. Does anyone know?

That would be kinda cool if true.
Another good indicator is how many fish are being caught in the trap. That can be accessed on the Fish & Game website and updated almost daily. In case you haven't seen it.

The first date is the release date (day fish was tagged), the second is the observation date. The hyperlink in front of every observation will take you to the fish's history record, which includes observations at other sites. I'd really like to know what percentage of hatchery fish are tagged.

Interesting data. How did you get it? I went to this site: http://www.ptoccentral.org/Data_and_Reports/, but I had a really hard time figuring it out and I didn't have enough time to really look hard.

Under the Data & Reports tab there is a link call Small Site Interrogation (or something like that). That will display a list of all the fish monitoring sites like Krassel. You can search the records by date. You have to register with the site in order to be able to search on their server, but it was free.
Was up on the Salmon this weekend, hooked 3, missed two more, landed none! I was completely unprepared (both mentally and equipment-wise) for a pissed-off salmon in heavy current. What a blast!
I wouldn't go back with anything less than 20# test.

I have used 20, but it is pretty marginal if you get in a really rocky hole. I typically use 30 so I'll have more abrasion resistance. I've been thinking about bumping that up to 40, but haven't done it yet.

I use 40 or 50lb braid on a heavy action rod, I used to use 30lb mono. Mono has the advantage in abrasion resistance but when you hang up and snap off you tend to lose a bunch of line. With the braid, it usually snaps off right near the end which is where all the little nicks are.
