Wiper Boils
#1
Another awesome invite led to another great day o fishing today. Hit the lake about 7am or so. Trolled most of the day picking up a fish here and a fish there. About 3pm clouds blotted out the sun and the wind picked up just a bit. With the sun taking a break the wipers lit the entire lake on fire. there were boils everywhere. We were the only fisherman we could see and had the boil chase all to ourselves. What a hoot. Although we ended up catching most of our fish trolling the boils were allot more fun. All in all we landed 16 wipers and one walleye between the three of us. This was my sons first Wiper boil. he had a blast. Said it was the best day of fishing he's ever had. Thanks D for taking us out.

Sounds like tons of fun. I remember doing that at Powell many years ago with the stripers.

Well I'm new to the whole fishing from a boat so I hope I get the terminology right. We were just long lining. We used a a miriad of different lures. Broke back Rapalas in shad patterns worked the best. Caught a couple on a lucky craft pointer that was white with a yellow stripe. Caught em on a few variations of lipless crank baits.

Why aren't the pics I attached showing up in the post????

I was there in the morning when the lake was glass. The mini-boils where everywhere. They lasted from 5-30 seconds!! Gotta love it when they are closer to the surface!

Oh no here we go... thanks for the post. With the cold front coming in, last night was the night for Willard I guess. I chose East Canyon and now I want to kick my own but.

I'll be out with my baitcaster and Super Spook Jr's tonight. Gotta love top water fishing the boils. There is no better fishing (in my opinion) here in the upper part of the state. If you haven't fished the boils, it really needs to be on your to-do-list. I've had them fight over my lures and knock them a good 12' out of the water..... whoooooo hoooo! Fish on.

With all the food in there it has been tough for most to even get a bite. Boils can be the only way to find fish

I'm thinnin' it's time to get out the cans of tomatoe juice, and give it another try. Hope I don't end up needing another skunkbath!

Since it's gonna be wicked hot, and thunder bumpers in the afternoon (most likely) I'm planning for an EARLY start Sunday. THIS time I'll see if I can beat the sun up.

The boil stories just sound too damned fun to miss out!

Got some new wally-jigs, worm harnesses, and stacker hooks - drag some worms and gulps. Maybe this time I'll find an "eye" or at least some "kitty cutters".
Pitch some WalleyDivers, and some Raps. Maybe some soft-body swimbaits. Wonder how big the shad are now-a-days?

Do you folks use POP gear at Willard? What about dodgers?

So where to start?
Aiming for the S. Marina, maybe toodle around the Feed Lot - see if I can locate the Island, then book to the light-pole, and work south to the corner.

Any suggestions? Edges or mid-water? Guess it depends on where the shad are holding up.

If the boils are starting my best advice is watch the sky. for birds that is. the little black headed terns will show you the fish. but dont stop scanning the water for the splashing from the wiper just starting to boil. no spot is better than another, just keep a look out for what I just told you.

stay sober you don't want to be tripping over poles trying to fish a boil that suprises you.[Wink]

Late evening around 8:15 to 8:45 was the only time we saw them and they where MICRO... you needed to be one them as quickly and quitely as possible.
The boils where maybe 30 seconds at best. the one boil I caught my fish on was south east of the light pole out in the middle of the lake. We were watching the birds dive and just trying to keep up with them. Good set of binoculars is a must!

Awesome - thanks for the tips. Dig it.

drink heavily, . . . but stay sober
(right - at least catch a buzz - so no 'mater-bath)
don't trip on poles
watch for birds, bring binoculars
have a faster boat than my little putz to get TO the boils before they're gone....

So should I be going at night to find boils, or are they going in the am too?
Maybe I should just bear the bugs and camp - do both evening AND morning! Unless the campsights are already booked up ???

Preciate the suggestions, and "thanks for all the fish".

Thanks, I figured they where not big boils yet but you never know. I agree about the binoculars I have a some in the boat at all times when the boils start up.

I will be out there Sunday with the brother-in-law,I just put a power drive on the front of his boat and he wants to check it out. I may take my boat to just to cover a bigger area to find the fish.

Thanks for the info.

I usually just go after work so I don't know about the mornings. There are times we don't even put a pole in the water cause we're looking for boils only. Seams to be later like after 8. Be careful to have the lights on the boat after the sun sets cause there is still 30 minutes or so of great fishing and the lights need to be on after the sun sets not when it gets dark. I saw 3 boats on Wed evening motoring into the marina with no lights on.
