You got my interest so I looked into it and I can not find a water according the the proclamation that has tiger muskie in it that you can legally spearfish. I may be wrong, there are many rules, but it seemed pretty specific when it came to spear fishing.
I saw the ad on KSL but I didn't click on it to read the whole thing. I would like to hear...the rest of the story []. [signature]

If you attempt to spearchuck them they will gang up on you and tear you to shreds! It would only be proper if they did. (I wish trout and walleye were that vicious!)

From the 2010 Utah Fishing Guide Book:
(Pages 10-11) "Underwater spearfishing Utah Admin. Rule R657-13-9 You may underwater spearfish—for both game and nongame fish—from 6 a.m. on the first Saturday of June through Nov. 30 at the following waters: • Causey Reservoir (Weber County) • Deer Creek Reservoir (Wasatch County) • Flaming Gorge Reservoir (Daggett County) • Jordanelle Reservoir (Wasatch County) • Kens Lake (San Juan County) • Lake Powell (Garfield, Kane and San Juan counties) • Lost Creek Reservoir (Morgan County) • Pineview Reservoir, [#ff0000]with the exception of tiger muskie[/#ff0000] (Weber County) • Red Fleet Reservoir (Uintah County) • Starvation Reservoir (Duchesne County) • Steinaker Reservoir (Uintah County) • Willard Bay Reservoir (Box Elder County) • Yuba Reservoir (Juab and Sanpete counties) At Fish Lake (Sevier County), you may underwater spearfish for all fish species from 6 a.m. on the first Saturday of June through Sept. 15. Underwater spearfishing hours are from official sunrise to official sunset. It is illegal to use artificial light while underwater spearfishing, and free shafting is prohibited. There are a few exceptions to these regulations: • At Flaming Gorge, you can underwater spearfish for burbot from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 24 hours per day. You can also use artificial light while spearfishing for burbot at this reservoir. Please see pages 22–23 for rules specific to Flaming Gorge. • At Lake Powell, you can underwater spearfish for carp and striped bass from Jan. 1 through Dec. 31. [#ff0000]• At Pineview Reservoir, you cannot underwater spearfish for tiger muskie. [/#ff0000]• At all waters open to angling—during their open seasons—you can underwater spearfish for carp. The underwater spearfishing bag and possession limits are the same limits that apply to anglers who use other fishing techniques at the approved spearfishing waters." The proclamation says you can only keep 1 tiger muskee over 40 inches, but I don't think there are any in any of the waters listed above exept for Pineview. And at Pineview, you cannot keep any, or spear fish for any, as stated in the proclamation. [signature]

There are a few Tiger Muskies in Fish Lake. They make their way upstream from Johnson's Reservoir.

regulations still apply -- 1 tiger musky over 40". This is where issues come up, because it's pretty tough to measure a musky before you spear it. If it's under 40" after you spear it, I guess they just sink the fish, and nobody ever knows.... spear fishing for tiger musky at Fish Lake has been pretty popular. Glad they got it shut down during the lake trout spawn... [signature]

Thanks for the info. I know about Fish Lake, but am ignorant to what is in it. Looking back over my post, I should have said, "I don't know" instead of "I don't think." I don't like to give people the wrong info if I can help it.

Hopefully it was at Fish Lake or somewhere legal.

I contacted the person. He treated me with respect and it is Fish Lake. He is following the regulations. No TM's under 40". Hard to judge inches I imagine when it's close to 40" but if dudeman is brave enough to advertise than I imagine he is following the regulations. How often do you hear about a guide breaking laws? It's usually the Joe Shmoe fisherman breaking the laws.

the picture on KSL is obvioulsy Fish Lake. I still don't like spearfishermen spearing fish with minimum length requirements. What happens when they spear one that isn't over the minimum?? I guarantee you that they don't bring the fish up and to shore... How do they "shoot and release"? [signature]

Go look at some of the pics in the bowery haven, there are a few spearfished muskies that to the trained fish eye are around 30" inches long. Nowadays after the recent spearing trouble up there i'm sure most of the tm's under 40" are going to be doing the old slow sink to the bottom after they get plugged.
Didn't fuzzy ron post on here a couple falls ago about someone being excited about killing the new state record spear musky and it being like 37" long??? [signature] |
