sounds to me like your fishing some rough terain. If that is indeed the case, switch to weedless hooks.

if your snagging trees with your cast, try not casting as far untill you master that particular weight.

if your snagging that stuff off the bottom of the lake or river, speed up your retreive, and dont use diving crank baits, Reeling in diving crank baits only makes them go to the bottom faster.

If I have missed it all together, feel free to enlighten us on what is happening, Then maybe we can pin point a solution.

Well fishing takes a long time to perfect. And the pros probably still lose a few lures every now and then. It sounds like you are fishing in water where it is very rocky. In this case, it is not a good idea to let your rig set on bottom. Moving lures are key. Also, if using a crankbait, you must make sure you do not use one that will dive too deep and get hung up in the rocks. Best way to fish these places are by using small lures that are light and single hooked. Then if you wish, work your way up to a larger lure, just be careful not to get too crazy. Also, if you are using a floating crankbait, if you fell it hit something or get hung up, your best chance is to immediately halt your retrieve and see if it will back itself out. Also try wiggling your rod tip slowly. If none of this works, jerk your rod in all directions to see if it will pop out one other way. If nothing works, and you're not on a boat, snap your line. If you are on a boat, go to the lure and try to pop it out by going in the opposite direction in which you were reeling in. I've even reached down in the water to get lures before. But obviously BE CAREFUL if you do that. Life jackets save lives. So good luck, and remember, you will lose lots of lures, all pros have.
