Willard boiling yet?
#1
I've yet to see any boils at willard this year, maybe we caught them all during the wiper-fest. Been out several times looking and reading everyone's posts and still nothing. Maybe it's not going to happen this year or we still have to wait a little longer, I don't know. Or maybe it's just because there's so many shad fry out there right now that they aren't having to work for them. Has anyone had or seen any consistency with the wiper boil's yet, sure would like some input if you have any. I'm starting to think about the hard water action already but I guess it's just because the wipers are depressing me.
I have been getting quite a bit of smallmouth action though, PV has been a blast. There are a lot of small ones but you hook into a good one every so often and it makes it all worth it, even picking up some largemouth on top water and that's a bonus. It's all in a good days fishing and it beats being at work or staying home, but I'm still thinking about the hard water, maybe it's just the heat.[fishin]

You might see some surface activity early in the morning or late in the evening but it is unlikely you will see any boils until later in the year after the shad have been thinned out a little.
On your comment about fishing the hard water, did you know they are going to allow us to use ATVs on willard during ice fishing season this year?

After seeing the open water in the mouth of the north marina this year, I dont think I would want to go out on a wheeler! There was 14 inches on the main lake and 10 in the marina with a visible "current" right at the mouth with open water, kinda scared me! They should open the south marina to ice fishing[Wink]

I know what you mean Mike, I noticed the same thing last winter but I think if you hug the North side of the channel, I think you would be OK. The manager at Willard told me that the only way that we would be allowed on the ice would be to go down the ramp and out the channel. We can not go out onto the ice by going onto one of the beaches and he said fines would be given if anyone tried to get on the ice by going across the beach. I'll contact him before ice fishing season and ask about the south marina being left open but I kind of doubt it because it would take more manpower and I think they really cut back in the winter.

It would require more man power, but it would be a good experiment to see what the interest would be for the 4wheelin ice anglers. The more that are out there, the more money willard bay could rake in. That alone could justify keeping the south open. I think willard could be great through the ice if you could jet around the main lake more. And with more and more people out there fishing and pioneering willard through the ice we would strart to see see patterns emerge and reports to get us all into fish. All of us who ice fish know how valuable somebody saying 'we caught them in the north arm 25ft down with wax worms' can be, eliminates alot of huntin and searchin. I would tend to think that the wipers would be alot like trout, schooled up and pobably pretty hungry to feed there weight, its just finding them. WH2, Im not sure how to do it, but maybe we should take a pole, then use that data to prove interest of the people that would hit willard from the south marina on a wheeler. If we start it now, maybe enough people would respond by ice on to show the people with the parks service. Worth a shot?[fishin]
