Hite, Lake Powell
#1
I've been at Hite for the last several days. Below is the summary.
In three days of fishing we had caught well over 100 fish; Striped bass, largemouth, smallmouth, walleye, crappie, bluegill and channel catfish. With the exception of a few caught on bottom bouncers, the great majority were caught trolling fast at depths from 10 to 20 feet or casting to boils. Had we been targeting smallmouth and largemouth this count would have probably been much higher. The striped bass are fat and full of shad. You have to fish hard to get them to hit and the boils are still short lived. The schools of shad we netted at the beach in front of Hite were predominately gizzard shad. As a final note: Launching off the main ramp was easy and not problematic even with big deep boats. Surface water temps were 78 to 83 degrees

Pez,
Thanks for the post, that wind sounds pretty serious (went to your site and read the story and saw pics).

I have been wondering how the north end was doing. I was supposed to go to Oregon salmon fishing but my partner up there flaked out on me. I have been thinking that Powell would be a pretty good substitution!

Thanks for the report. We were down near Escalante and saw 2 actual boils for the week. We had a big storm come through on Wednesday (8/11) that uprooted a springbar and threw it to the top of the hill and then produced some spectacular water falls

The scary thing about Powell is not the wind, but how fast the wind comes up. You have to pay attention to what is going on around you. Probably no worse than Strawberry, the Gorge or Utah Lake.
I'm planning on going back to the big lake very soon. What a tremendous fishery!
