Super Cat Bonanza, with tagged fish and

trophy plants, kicks off this week at SARL

The Super Cat Bonanza kicks off the Friday and continues through Labor Day weekend at Santa Ana River Lakes. The bonanza features two benchmarks of SARL's summer catfish promotions.

First, there will be plants of trophy catfish to 10 pounds -- and maybe even bigger -- each week of the event. A total of 19,000 pounds of catfish will be planted, including 3,000 pounds of the big boys.

Second, there will be over 200 tagged catfish planted. These tags are worth gift certificates and prizes worth from $5 to $100. The prizes include quality sleeping bags, rod & reel combos, tee-shirts, gate passes and free boat rentals.

The bonus plants will only improve the already good fishing over the next two weeks. Limits have been pretty common, especially for 24-hour pass anglers who have been getting full 15-fish stringers.

The top catfish reported this past week was a 13.1-pounder landed by Steve Willard, Redondo Beach, while fishing shrimp in the Catfish Lake. Michelle Orr, Anaheim, landed a 10.7-pound cat.

Third place big fish honors go to Arturo Bravo, San Diego, who had a 10.2 pounder that topped off a 47.3-pound, 15-fish limit, which was also the best stringer of the week. Amber Compton, Fullerton, caught a 10-even, while Jose Eduardo, San Diego, had 12 cats, including an 8.1-pounder, that weighed 30.7 pounds.

Catfish have been caught throughout the complex, but it seems like three baits or bait combos have been the best this week. First, the M&M (marshmallow-meal worm) pairing when soaked with one of the flavors of Crave Gravy has been the best producer, but coming in close second has been shrimp or mackerel, also doused with Crave.

Even with the special Super Cat Bonanza, the "family nights" special will continue through the rest of the summer. This special allows anglers who purchase a $40, 24-hour pass -- which has a 15-fish limit -- to bring the wife and up to three kids 12 and under for the single pass price. While the limit for all anglers is still 15 catfish, anglers can bring the whole family for a camping trip to the lakes. These 24-hour passes are only available on Friday and Saturday nights.

Santa Ana River Lakes is being planted three times a week with channel cats. The fish average from 1 1/2 to 3 pounds, but the bonus plants will kick the average size up through Labor Day weekend. Anglers can fish from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on day passes, or from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on an evening pass. Each pass has a five-fish limit. Seniors can fish on Wednesdays for just $12. The 24-hour passes are valid from 5 p.m. until 4 p.m. the following day.

Corona Lake ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Tagged fish worth up to $100 and

trophy cats planted in Corona Lake

The catfish bite at Corona Lake continues to be very good, and the kickoff this week of the Super Cat Bonanza, with tagged cats worth up to $100 in gift certificates and trophy fish to 10 pounds or better, will only improve this action.

The best bite has been with mackerel or shrimp soaked in any of the flavors of Crave Gravy, according to David Horn at the lake. DuMong's mackerel and a nightcrawler tipped with a meal worm are also good bets. Top areas have been at the dam, near the docks, and in the flooded trees for boat anglers.

Top catfish this week was a nice seven-pounder that topped off a 24-pound, 10-fish stringer landed by Noble and Rubin Jackson, both of Riverside. They were fishing shrimp near the courtesy dock.

Jeff McDeroff, Riverside, had a 24-hour, 15-fish limit that weighed 35 pounds, including a four-pounder as his top catch, while Dave Barry, Corona, landed his five-fish limit on a regular permit that weighed 15 pounds, and included a six-pounder.

The lake is open seven days a week with fishing allowed from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on day passes, or from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on an evening pass. Each pass has a five-fish limit. Seniors can fish Wednesdays for just $12. In addition, 24-hour passes are being sold Friday and Saturday nights and these passes have a 15-fish limit.
