No Bull

Took the family camping in Northern Nevada hoping to catch a bull trout in its southernmost range. Only got a 2-3 hours fishing in and no bull trout. Bull trout are supposed to be present above 7000 ft on several of the area streams. Only fished at 6500- 7000 ft so I think I needed to hike further up. Next trip I'll have to leave the family home or back in camp so I'll have a chance. Some of the small streams were among the prettiest I've ever fished and totally without trash or even footprints from people. Come to think of it I never saw anyone else fishing the entire time. Did manage to catch many Redband trout. Never caught any before so made up some for for not catching any bull trout. I forget my camera and my wife's camera batteries died after the first picture of one. This fish is very small and the coloration doesn't show up all that well in the picture but it's all I got. They are a pretty fish that retain their parr markings even as they grow larger. A great trip and dozen of streams in roadless wilderness areas left to fish next trip.

I have heard about the Bullies and also that there are some very large Brookies up there in the mountains. What a cool trip! Thanks for sharing.

Emerald Lake has brookies but there are very few in the streams. The rare ones caught in streams can't be released because they don't want them to hybridize with the bull trout. Quite a few fish to be found- the natives include bull, redband, bonneville cutthroat and lahontan cutthroat trout plus whitefish. Besides introduced brookies I think there are a few rainbows as well. Great small stream fishing and solitude. If you don't know where I'm talking about just google Drawbridge Wiscosin [] or something like that. If too many Utahns show up and start to ruin the place the locals are likely to get a rope to put a stop to it[shocked].

Hey riverdog im from nevada and fish up there when time allows very nice streams indeed. Fishing for bulls have been ruff the last two years even in higher elavations what were you throwin at em?

Ant patterns were very effective for the redbands. Used some prince and hares ear nymphs as well. Got lots of strikes on those but they would hit it so fast and I would only hook about one in a dozen strikes. Got almost as many strikes on the ant and would land most fish. Probable just got up to 7000- 7200 ft elevation tops. Do you at least catch some bulls occasionally up higher still?
