Went to onieda dam/bear river, got there around 1nd it was very mossy so didn't fish the river. When I got to the dam its still launchable for small boats and took some pictures will post. Headed up to my fav spot above maplegrove and caught 3 walleye, 4 carp, 1 perch and 1 other fish I forget what it is can anyone refresh my memory? All in all a very good day to go out and spend the day with my family, great way to relax. Saw a few deer come down to get a drink too...one doe with triplets. Wonderful weather as well.

That kind of looks like a tilapia. I had no idea those were in there. It looks like one more species to add to the list of fish I want to catch. I'm very curious to give Oneida a try now. The spot I usually fish is on dry land, but I'm wondering if the fish will be more concentrated now. I guess I may have to go see for myself.

It has the right body and fin shapes. I've only heard of them being in The Snake before, but with the hot springs up at Oneida, I guess it could be possible for them to survive if someone put them in there. Whatever it is, I hope we find out for sure what it is. I'm very curious.

That makes sense if they have them in Grace. Some could have escaped and gone downstream. I'm jealous, I love catching new species.

Tilapia. Congratulations on an unusual catch!
They don't have them at the Grace Fish Hatchery. It is a state run cold water hatchery for trout and they wouldn't plant them.
There is a tilapia farm in the Gentile Valley just up river from Oneida. I raised tilapia for a couple of years with my school class. The guy in Gentile Valley there gave me the fish that I started with. Very nice little operation there.
I doubt if anyone planted them in the river intentionally. Unless someone was giving them a try a Maple Grove Hot Springs. Either way they are probably accidental escapees. Very easy for the escapees to come down to Oneida in the summer time at least. To survive over winter they would need to hang near some of the hot springs. Looks like they are doing well.
I would love to catch a few of those myself.

Well there you go. That sounds like the likely source. I always fish down by the dam because I like catching smallmouth and there are more rocks down there, but I just might have to start trying by the hot springs. I really want to catch one of these things.

I am pretty sure we saw you up there. We were out in the brown flat bottom boat. We did not make it up that far. We end up with a bunch of good size perch. 10 or so smallies and 4 eater size walleye. Hooked one larger walleye that got off at the boat. By bigger it was maybe 3 lbs.. It was sure a pretty day up there.

Were you just up from the Maple Grove Hot Springs private campground or were you by the Maple Grove BLM or what ever it is camping area? The one that is about half way between the dam and the hot springs.
I am curious as to how far that tilapia was from the hot springs. I think they could actually be anywhere in there in the summer time. As long as it is over about 55 degrees.

That one looks a little different than the ones here in the river around Twin Falls / Hagerman. Ours have larger lips and a lot darker in color. Ron
