I have always been curious to know if it is productive or useless to use rappelas from shore. I have seen many people using little 3 inch rattling rappelas from the shore but never seen one land a fish with one.
I ask because I am a shore fisherman and have been looking for ways of increasing my skill and experience. So far this year I have not been very productive so I am looking into new and stronger ways to shore fish.
I own a few different reels/rods including baitcasters and spinning and can pretty well use any lure out there.
I am going up to the uintas in a few days for a few days and dont want too smell like three day old skunk...

Under the right circumstances throwing rapalas or other lures of that type can be very effective. I have caught walleye, LM Bass, SM, Bass, Trout and a variety of panfish using rapalas from shore. They wont get fish every outing but then what does? Keep at it you will get them and learn under what conditions to use them.

It can be very affective for Bass. Especially LM and SM Bass. But any aggressive fish will go after them.
You just have to know where to throw them, and when to set the hook.
Try them at East Canyon.

One of the challenges with the small rapalas is that they are hard to cast because they are so light. But they do catch fish.

Why wouldn't you be able to catch fish from shore with Rapala's or virtually any other lure for that matter? There aren't many lures that are exclusive to boaters. Either way you're just standing on a solid surface and presenting a lure/bait in an available column of water. What you have to do is tailor your presentation to the specific circumstances. Is the water deep or shallow; is it weedy, rocky, or open smooth bottom; what's the water temp; etc. Now what species are likely to be present; what lures do these species typically hit and what lure will I be able to work the area with most effectively.
Now go look at basspro-shops.com selection of Rapala's and I will show you a Rapala, or a ton of others lures, that will work in shallow, deep, weedy, rocky, open, warm or cold water. Lures are not all created equal nor are the fish that eat them. Lures are tools that are created for different situations and fish species. Do some homework on the species you're after then ask specific well thought out questions and you might just get some great information.
What I would do (have done) is after searching this site for information go to in-fisherman.com and lindnermedia.com check out their vidoes, buy a few DVD's, buy a book, subscribe to the magazine, heck go to the library and see what they have that can help you in your quest for fishing education.

[#804000]Try them about 6 feet behind a full casting bubble........Take off the belly hook so it doesn't tangle on the cast.[/#804000]

For the best luck with Rapala's from shore is to try the XRap Minnow as it is weighted to cast farther. My second choice would be the Count Down Rapala. Depending upon where you are fishing... Black and gold would be my first choice. Good Luck

Of course they'll work. So will any other lure you throw from shore. The only problem you are going to face is that when (not if) you hang it up, chances are you're going to lose it. A good option for shore fisherman is a plastic worm because you can fish it weedless and fish love 'em if you fish it correctly. Also, the best piece of advice for anyone fishing from the bank is to keep moving and don't always cast as far out into the lake as you can. There's a ton of fish right along the bank. Also, leave your tacklebox in the car. You don't need every bait you own. Just take a few that you have confidence in and make them work for you.
