The Berry
#1
I'm taking my cousin out for a day at the berry this Saturday, and as i've mentioned in posts past, i've had a hell of a time with it this year. Something just keeps pulling me back. Anyway, my cousin hasn't had much of the pleasures of fishing in his life, and i would really like to hook him. So, i figured some nice cutts (slots or not) and bows would do the trick.

I'm thinking that i'll go with what has worked for me in the past, such as dead chub and shiners along with white 3" tubes tipped with either minnow or crawly.

Does anyone have another good pointer for me? With the fact in mind that i'm not set up to troll...? This is my favorite place to go for tips. Everyone seems to be great fisherpeople with a good honest quality about them.

Any direction is very much appreciated. Thanks in advance to everyone!

We did well over the weekend on the renegade side in 30 ft of water for rainbows and a few big cuts. We caught them on everything you mentioned and powerbait.

Thanks for the info! Have you heard anything about the Soldier Creek side of things?

i always have luck with a luckycraft pointer 78 in the ghost minnow color... it looks like a chub and they go crazy over it. it is a little expensive but well worth it. you can also use blue fox spinners, blue works great (they sell big packs of em at walmart for cheap.) or use a rapala in the rainbow color. i am going up on friday so i will pm you my number because i don't always remember to post reports. are you going to be in a boat or on shore?

The best lure or bait when we was up there this last Sunday was the Gulp minnow in 3" drop shot...

If your shore fishing then the dam at Soldier Creek is a good place to go. The Aspen Grove boat ramp is also a good location which can be fun for catching crawdads when the fishing is slow. If you don't fish Soldier Creek much, the boat ramp is within walking distance from the west side of the dam.

Bassrods, thanks for the info, but what is a drop shot? I have an Idea. And what brand are gulp minnows and where do you get them? And How is best to hook a minnow and what size hook?

Thank you for the input, Brad! I will look for the luckycraft, and i think i have a few blue bluefoxes in the box if i remember correctly. And, i've got a rapala in a brownie pattern, i'll have to pick up a rainbow one as well. I will be in a little 14' tuna can (hopefully the wind cooperates, that thing can be scary as hell when the weather turns!)

Basically, a drop shot is a weight at the bottom with a lure suspended above it. Saltwater fishermen have used this approach for a long time to keep their bait up off the bottom, and they'll rig up 4 - 10 hooks sometimes. Gulp minnows, i think, are made by berkley. I looked for some yesterday at a little fishin shop (fish tech) around the corner from my house, but i couldn't seem to find any. Maybe sportsmans or somewhere. As for hooking a dead minnow, i've done a few different ways that seemed to work, just depending on the kind of look/feel you want it to have. I've rigged them onto a 3/0 round jig head, threading them like a jig, from the mouth down and i've also just used anything from large worm hooks to headless tube hooks (not sure of what those are actually called, sorry.) Hope this sheds a little light for you, Uinta.

Thanks for the post bassrods! Do you think that an old banjo would suffice in place of a gulp? I couldn't seem to locate any gulps yesterday, but i do have some old banjos kicking around...

the luckycrafts are like $13-15 each bit i think they are well worth it. they have rattles in them too and the fish love them. cabelas makes a cheap look a like but i am not sure how well they work. jointed rapalas are great too. use a little of the berkley fish attractant and you will do well. i always just rent a tuna can and i agree it is scary, but when the fishing is good its hard to get off the lake... that mistake nearly killed me at fish lake. be careful and be safe and best of luck to you

I hit the S.C. side on sat. night. Things are a little slow because an algae bloom was going on but still managed a nice 23" cutthroat on a white minnow imitation. It sounds like the algae bloom hit the strawberry side awhile ago and now is finally starting on the S.C. side. It is crazy how this lake sometimes acts like 2 different lakes and fishes differently as well sometimes.

Yeah, that same mistake nearly killed me at the berry too. Needless to say, i think i've learned my lesson the hard way.

Thanks for all the input, and best of luck to you as well! Let us know how friday goes for you.

I'm sure everyone is getting rather tired of all my questions...sorry if it's a bother. But, on the dropshot, are you nose hooking the gulp with a good ol octopus hook, or threading like an old school grub with a head?

I've been practicing my palomar knot, but i can't get the damn thing to hang perpendicular. It wants to fall down with the line...[crazy]
