Strawberry 10-9-10. What a day!
#1
Took my cousin to the berry on Saturday and what a day we had! He had only ever caught one fish before this outting (he's 21 years), and this was a fantastic trip for the both of us. It took him some time to figure out how to set the hook, but once he did he started to actually boat some slot cutts. I was able to catch about 20 or so myself, and of course, they were all in the slot with the biggest one going 21".

Now let me back up. It was an interesting day from the start. First, i forgot the battery for my finder, so we had to fish without sonar this time. Needless to say i was a little frustrated for a minute, but no big deal. We launched on the SC side and headed for my little 'honey hole'. On the way there we saw a nice buck and a doe with twins tagging along. Beautiful animals. Then once we reached my sweet spot we could hear the elk bugling (with gun shots to follow. I wonder if they got him..?) Shortly after that it sounded like a herd of buffalo was coming down the mountain at us. As i look up across the lake from where we were there was a huge boulder crashing down the hill, taking out out croppings of rock as it went and came splashing into the water. What a sight! It was one of the cooler things i've ever seen...

Anyway, back to the fishing. I attempted a DS rig, but i need some serious practice on that one. I will get better. Got tired of fighting it, so i rigged a gulp in shad color on a light hook and fished it close to surface. I managed the first cutt of the day on that one, coming in at about 18". That slowed right down, so i went back to the old faithful 3" white tube tipped with some chub. They loved it. Stuck with that set up the whole rest of the day and we did really well.

Tommy wanted to take some fish home to his GF for dinner so we kept 3 bows that were right in the 15" range. Not huge, but not dinks either. However, I also caught a really nice bow at about 19" and fat (full of crawdads. so full i'm surprised he was hungry at all). Pic of the fatty bow attached. Forgot the camera, so forgive the quality. It's a phone pic.

Thanks for everyone's input before my outting! I got a lot of nice tips, and tried my best to put them all to use. There just aren't enough hours in a day for fishing!

Nice report. You did better than I did (in the morning at any rate[Wink])
We were on the water around 8:30 0n the Soldier Creek side.
It was brutal with the wind and COLD!!!! But we were on our Pontoon boats.
Very slow till noon when we went in for lunch and a nap.
Came back out at 4 till 6 and hammered them.
I guess because of the cold, they moved back out because we were hammering them with fast sinking fly land in 80' of water.
Little disappointing that there weren't more BIG fish. we were in the 18" to 22" and allot of bows.
My biggest went without picture as it was another double. I fish two flies on one rod. one fly had a nice 19" bow and the other fly hooked what looked to be 25" to 26". Considerable bigger. Net wasn't big enough and off it went (barbless hooks), but I did net and photo the 19".
Sunday, forget it. Caught two before the wind started in.

Good post, beautiful fish. Looks like I have a lot more exploring to do at Strawberry, where I fish it looks like a desert. I'm excited to see what else is out there.

We must have seen you, then. Were you hanging by the islands just out from the ramp? I saw two toons there. We were two guys in a little 14' tuna can (slow moving and noisy). I watched one of the toons we saw net a fish and we gave them the thumbs up. That must have been around 1ish, i think...?

I typically go west then south up around the bend. My favorite little cove is over there, and it has good shelter from the wind along with pretty decent bottom cover that i think the fish enjoy. Everything we caught except 2 bows came out of that hole. However, there have been times that i've not even been able to tempt a bite out of there.

Too bad you couldn't net that 25"er! I'm sure that was a beautiful fish!

I've successfully addicted my cousin to fishing, and i think we're headed out again either Saturday or Sunday. It's supposed to warmer, so i'm hoping the wind cooperates too, but we all know how the berry and wind mix oh so very well. [Wink]

We are easy to spot. One Yellow and one blue 10'6" pontoons with electric motors and two red (one 10'6" and one 12') with gas motors.

The fish look good, but I get spoiled after fishing the lake up north (Idaho) then come back. Now those fish are fat and huge. I sure wish we had Kamloops. [Wink]

Nice report, we had similar day last week around Renegade, only we were trolling. I need to get over and try SC side, haven't done that this Fall.

Somebody's got to fill me in on 'Renegade'.. As I understand it, it's at the south end of Strawberry where the other boat ramp is. However, last year, I went out there about 4 different times and never saw any major action with the fish. I've tried trolling and jigging, and haven't had luck. Where exactly are you guys having such luck at Renegade? Is it directly east of the ramp, or a bit north and west of the ramp??

I have a few favorite spots on Strawberry, but it's good to have more just in case the 'sweet' spot isn't being sweet on a particular day.

Also, when does Strawberry freeze over? And is fishing good all the way up to freeze over?
