PineView oct 10 and 11 the good and the bad (PICS)
#1
Fished the view yesterday oct 10 with joe (utcatman) and i must say it was the best smallie day i have ever had.

Got on the lake at 730 to a fog blanket over the lake, beautiful view of the lake. Headed to our spot and started "whacking" the smallies. Stayed in the same spot for about two hrs before we pulled anchor and started trolling the shore. we ended up pulling about 30 smallies and 1 lmb out of the spot. Fish were from 7 inches and up to the high teens with each of us catching our personal best smallie (SEE PICS).

Started moving and throwing for musky and had a few hook ups and a couple break offs before i landed the first musky of the day on a spinnerbait.

Moved to the next shoreline that has always been productive for smallies and micro muskies. Picked up 2 lmbs right of the bat and broke off a musky as well.

Started moving again and catching a bass here and there but really chasing and wanting the muskies.

I started throwing a big yozuri crank while joe throw his secret lure which paid off in the end.

Joe ended up catching a smallie, lmb, and a nice musky on the secret lure before we called it a day. We fished from 730 - 730pm yes 12hrs on the lake and total fish count for smallies was around 40 with maybe 5 or 6 llms and 3 micro muskies ono my part and joes nice musky.

Joe got big smallie of the day as well as big musky of the day.

we saw some monster muskies hanging out on bottom on the flats close to deep water.

Fished the view again oct 11 and wow what a change, fished for about 4 hrs with only about 10 smallies and three muskies that broke me off and did some out of water acrobats. the areas that were productive yesterday only yielded a fish here and there. got on a spot that i caught a micro musky yesterday and found it to hold about 4 or 5 12" to 22" micro muskies. Had two hook ups and one break off, in this area i saw something cool , there was a small micro musky about 12" or so inches that had a friend folllowing behind him, his friend was about a 14" lmb that was just following him around, kinda cool to see them hanging out together.

Left the lake around 1130 water temp was 59.5*

Water is dropping fast

lake was glass but the fish have scattered since yesterday

ENJOY THE PICS

those are some nice fish. My brother and i plan to go to pineveiw on thursday, were the bass deep or still shallow and if you dont mind what lures were you using. My brother and i both would like to get our first muskie and some nice bass would be fun if no muskie are caught.
thanks

Thanks for the post & nice pics. Congrats on those fat SMB, especially since they are your personal best. How do you see the muskey's in water? How far ahead or to the side are you looking and what area's are you looking in? Do you have an electric trolling motor (I don't and I've never seen one in the water so I'm wondering if my gas motor scares them off)

i spot the musky with my polarized glasses i just look for em in the shallow water. when i am using my electric trolling motor i just cruise slow, yes the gas motors will scare them away but most of the musky i spotted yesterday were in 2 ft or lessof water right by the shore. The bigger ones were in 5 or 6ft of water

Man - you guys got that lake's number I'd say. Nice round of fishn. Appreciate the report

Now don't take this wrong - but I'm impressed by the size of your fish, but not the size of your photos. Seems like they're sized down to "avatar" level. Would love to catch more detail of them beasts.
Just caught a post from Leaky - back 9/30, musta missed it - where he hit on some MONSTER big smallies. There are some toads in there! Guess if ya know where to look.

Just got a package today with some new top water - poppers, and some rattlin cranks - good range of color patterns. I think they need some play!

You mention a lot of breakoffs - is that they've broke your line, and run off with your lure (even the 'secret' one? Is that the one the guy at Willard gave you?!), or just head shaking and faking and getting off? (they're pretty good at both...)
If I recall - you guys don't use steel leaders do ya? I've found that challenge at Newton - having some rods rigged for perch/bass, and another set at the ready to pitch for Musky.

In early spring they were really easy to see - come up out of no where, and be right under your boat. See them lurking on the bottom in the shallows too. But they often move in and out - prowling around. Kinda spooky sometimes! Watch for stripes.

ya sorry for the mini pics, they were taken from my phone and i can not figure out to get them in full size. The small pictures do the fish no justice, no justice at all. Three of our smallies the other day were 3 1/2 lbs plus. wish i could get the pictures to show more details

as far as the break offs - the reason being is that when we fish for the bass with tube jigs the muskies like to harass us and steal our tubes, you get a head shake or two before they slice right through 8 up to 17lb mono or co polymer line. We have landed a few musky on the tubes and drop shots but most of them are the smaller micro muskies. I hate using steal leader so i am looking into alternatives such as braid or mono in the 100lb range for a small leader, i feel you loose the finesse of fishing tubes with steal leaders.

Oh - I wasn't talking about the fish - I meant your tats! [:p]
Ok - seriously, now I am kidding.
Figured it might be something like that. Hey - any shots are appreciated. Thanks for the info on your tubes too.

At least you're not breaking of $5-10 lures each time then! Do you find they (bass) prefer certain colors over others? I've got them little salty tubes - blue/white, red, white. Plus bigger tubes with sparkles in em and stuff. Need to get them more excercise. May chase some bass at Hyrum tonight. (need to wash off the Willard skunk, and reaffirm my hookset confidence!)

Again - well done you guys! Nice to know they're out there.

Good post Wildcat94! Your success shows pineview is still a good fishery. I've heard reports from a few friends and they've actually had a hard time catching anything at the view, so your report supports what I've been telling them. It's a good fishery! Thanks for posting good details on your outings...not much people care to say anything about what they did to catch fish.

bassin1 - pineview is a great fishery - the main thing that has impressed me this year at the view is the amount of lmbs i have caught. They seem to have had a good spawn and a good survival rate. We have been hitting the view 2 or 3 times a week and have been doing really good, as far as the water clarity its been really clear.

THere has been low boat traffic and the times i have been out it has been awesome glass smooth water.

I will be up there this sunday with my 12 yr old lil bro chasing some muskies. He has never caught a musky or a bass( he is a trout guy from wyo) so i am hoping to get him on them.

the bass are moving deep but i still have a few secret spots that the bass have been holding in...

Wildcat94- You're right...I have seen alot more LMB at Pineview this year, so it looks like their survival rate increased. I'm from Texas so I'm glad to see that the LMB's are thriving. My personal best LMB this year was 9.5 #'s, but I caught in El Salto.

Anyway, I headed out to pineview tomorrow and your tips are appreciated...so how deep have you been finding them lately? you mentioned the bass are moving deep, have you been fishing deep structure? Any thoughts on putting in the boat at the port (no docks) vs cementary point?

[#500000]I have hooked large muskies using mono and had some pretty good fights before they ripped it ........ I'm like you, I was thinking maybe 50 lb. braid ........ I think you could get by with only 6 to 8 inches.[/#500000]

i have actually started to use 65lb braid and have liked it. My buddy has used 40 and 50lb braid and has had the musky slice through, since then he has actually switched to 120lb flourcarbon as a leader and has worked really well for him. I am rigging my rods up tonight for my sunday misky trip so hopefully i can get a 40+ incer
