Labman, Chickamauga, Bass +, 10/07/2010, Solo, my largest fish on a bass crank bait
#1
Put in a CFP about 2:30 for a quick afternoon bass scouting trip. Found a bay just off the main channel that was just loaded with shad. Plus the wind was blowing a bit towards the back of the bay. Must be some bass in there. Followed the creek channel toward the back and started throwing a Bomber crankbait that I just bought this morning. BassERT just killed them on the Nick yesterday with a very similar bait. Caught a couple of schoolies in about 8' of water just off the weed edge. Hard to get a bait through the shad, they kept impaling on the hooks.
This bait runs about 4-8' and rips through the weed edges pretty good.

Had a hard hit in 6' of water and knew immediately it was too heavy for a bass. I thought probably a big drum as I had already caught a small one. To make a long story short, it was a blue cat and after fighting it for about 25 minutes I finally got the gripper/scale on it. Weighed 34# on my Berkley digital scale. I really didn't think it looked that heavy, but was very fat and full of shad. Wore my arm out, and easily the biggest fish I have ever caught on a bass size crankbait.

Ended the afternoon with 7 bass, 5 keepers and a couple of small, 2 med drum, and mr cat. Never got into any really good sized bass, largest about 2.5 #. I think I am getting closer to getting them figured out. Tried deep in the creek channel with a spoon, but could not get a bite.

Regards, Labman
