I tend to have much better success with the eggs than with the meat itself. The only way I've ever used them is straight out of the fish at Fish Lake. I land the perch, cut it up, throw the eggs on a hook and head for deep water. Never thought of using something to keep them together. Sure would be nice to get more than one or two bites off of them.

[cool][#0000ff]Most fish will eat fish eggs...of their own or other species. Perch will eat almost anything fishy...perch strips, perch eyes, perch eggs or pieces of carp, chub or any other legal bait fish.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Do perch eggs work any better than any other bait for perch? Not in my opinion. I do best with strips of "prepared" perch meat. I save small perch from previous trips and fillet them before freezing...about 4 to 6 small fillets per bag, with a bit of water to prevent freezer burn. The night before a fishing trip I cut the fillets into bait sized pieces, sprinkle them with non-iodized salt (sea salt) and add a few drops of crawdad scent. Then I put them in the refrigerator over night to marinate. These strips give off a lot of scent and hold up well for multiple fish bites. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]You can use fresh perch eggs, from the fish you catch out on the ice. Early in the season, before the ovaries are more developed (looser eggs) you can just snip out a small ball to cover the hook of your jig. They will hold well enough to catch at least one fish. Kinda like waxworms. If you want more "holding power", take along some white cotton sewing thread and make a few wraps around the membrane of the eggs to help hold them on the hook better. No need for fancy knots...just a few wraps and snip the end.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Where perch eggs are REALLY good bait is for catfish. Save and freeze the roe sacks during the winter and then present them to kittyfish in the spring. Kitty Kandy.[/#0000ff]

Perch eggs make a great bait. I don't use them for perch though, that is a waste when the dumb little fish will hit literally anything else too.

I go to lakes that have perch and trout in them, which is most lakes in Utah, and the perch eggs seems to kill the bigger trout! I use them both Ice fishing and early spring. The pantyhose is best way to attach them. Vary the colors for a different look.
