Chris and I got on Nick today around 8am. Fog was in thick as we headed down to Mullens Cove. Chris had 2 lame hits on a frog and we decided to head south to see if there was any less fog. Pulled up to another very shallow and small grassy area and had quite a few blow ups...I landed two dinks. Went to another small grass area and I caught one that was 3.5lbs and another that was just a hair lighter. Moved again to another area that we fished last weekend. Well, most of the grass there was gone, I don't mean thinner, I mean gone. Eventually we found some more greass and started getting some really good frog bites, just misses for the most part. About this time the schoolers show up, but they were mostly in the 3lb range so it was all good. We both caught several with soft plastics and the occasional frog fish. The shad were so thick that it looked like it was raining from all the dimples on the surface. We started to see some bigger fish busting a little deeper and headed that way. I managed to land a small striper, maybe 3-4lbs, but that was it for them. Chris decided to chunk a jerkbait near some rip rap and immediately tags a super fat bass, but we would have already culled him. A couple of casts later he grunts and I see a huge swirl, this fish is digging straight out and down so we figured it was another striper...nope turned out to be a 5.5lb bass. We moved around a bit more and caught a few more but nothing special. Our best five today went right at 18lbs so it was a nice day.
