Overton Arm 12/4/10

I missed a few weeks of fishing so my brother and I decided to make a run out on Saturday. We headed out to Echo and lanched about 6:30. The weather was calm and cold. The sun peeked out briefly mid morning and then the clouds rolled in. We fished the north side of the arm lookin for bass for about 3 hours without a sniff. Not sure where the bass are. The day started smellin skunky and so we decided to targer some striper. Fished (search and destroy) schools for about 3 hours and caught around 12 stripers. A couple of the fish were probably in the 4 pound range, we forgot to scale them. We lost numerous fish near the boat and probably could have caught a dozen or two more If we could have stayed longer. (I do love my wife[cool]) We pulled out of the marina at 1:30.

We were just cruising the arm and looking for schools with the humminbird, (found them in water that was 15-30 feet) and then would cast and troll through them. All the fish were caught on swimbaits. The Spro 6" Rainbow and Berkley 4" chartruese shad. The fish and bait were pretty active, at one point a spooked fatty 5" shad tried hiding in my outboard.

We took the fish home for a sunday fish-fry [fishin]

Thanks for the report n pics[cool] those are some nice stripers aswell, would of thought they would be deeper. I'm done with mead until spring the winter can be ruff for us bank tanglers.

yeah, they were shallower than I would have thought. The whole arm is shallow though so I guess thats what they got to work with. They seemed to be everywhere in small schools just chasin shad. Bankin it is always good for that cat bite though, you never know when that 20lber is comin.[]

It was a last minute trip and I took a little heat for it [sly]but Its always worth it. I really like gettin out in the winter cause the water is so empty, its like a whole other lake when there is no one else around.

Yeah the winter is great you don't go home all sun beaten n sweaty and its almost spooky quiet out there.

But last winter I bank fished mead every weekend and almost always found myself stumped. Not getting into much action with lures including the cat bite with bait compared to other times of year.

So this year I decided to put mead off for the winter and focus more on the northern NV trout reservoirs up near elko. Wildhorse res is hot during the winter even though it freezes over. It has caused me to spend countless dollars on ice fishing gear.

Last time I was out at echo bay it looked like they were doing some kind of construction near the closed down fish cleaner n bathrooms maybe a new ramp. Did you see any progress?

Nice catch. Winter time is great mostly just fishermen and women. Echo has a nice temp ramp open with shuttle service to parking. Also new ramp is under construction. Hope it does not take as long as the road did.
