Mantua Fun!!!
#1
Headed out to Mantua this morning. Got there just before the sun came up. Was the only one there for about an hour. Had a little fun. I found some bluegill and enjoyed it. Had to leave at 10:45 so my friend could get back to Logan to work. The two of us ended up with a total of about 35 - 40 fish. Took home 3 trout and threw back 5. Took home 28 bluegill and threw back about 5 or 6. Here is a pic of my keep. They are now filleted waiting to be fried. I will be back there in the morning before sunrise too. Hopefully I will be able to spend more time out there too.

We were there as well and needless to say we slayed em!!! Well over 100 fish in 4.5 hours gills were bigger than I have ever seen there! ! Didn't matter what bait either! !! Just a wide open bite. Smile

Ditto. Put the Christmas lights up yesterday, which involved 3 hrs of my life I'll never get back, so I thought I deserved a trip to Mantua myself. Solid 5" of ice atop 2" dusting of snow. Accessed east portal and headed towards knoll. Augered in 11am-ish. Cooperative bluegill bite pretty much non-stop until departing at 1pm. They even came up to intercept bait on way down, always a green flag. Went home w/20 eaters, tho I had to edit & delete another 20 who, like PIKEMAN, just didn't measure up. Only one perch today, no bass and SHOCKER for Mantua ice: no slimers. Today's ticket was using a nanometer jig w/waxie over 12'. Forgot the camera in the truck, so took pics roadside. Also have access shot of ramp.

Those are some pretty gills. My kids think it is fun to watch them "color up" after being caught in Utah Lake through the ice. They always come out a pink color but after minutes of laying on the ice in the sun, those nice vertical bars show and the different colors begin to appear. Excellent eating too. Thanks for the pic.

Mantua doesn't have any special limits on bluegill. The limit is 50.

There is a thief out there too. I was sitting there baiting my hook while keeping an eye in my other pole. Then right before my eyes, it vanished! I couldn't believe it. No warning nibbles or anything. That fish knew she was eating that ice fly. Thanks to karl_l, he found my rod with his underwater camera. But when they were in the process of pulling it up with another rod, they found out the fish was still on there. It pulled the rid off their hook and disappeared. Oh well. It was a cheaper rod that I had for a couple of years. More than anything, I just want to see what is attached to it. I have never had anything hit my rod like that.

They do have the bass-restriction - only 1 over a foot. I think the perch number is 40?
They're pretty generous on the panfish. Trout still stand at 4 for the limit.

Yupper - morning - the game is on! Don't think I'll make it at o-dark-thirty, but hopefully the bite will still be on, and there might be a spot of ice left open!

Derek - I'm calling you when I head, then I'm just-a-going!

The perch limit is the state-wide limit of 50.
