Caution at Holmes Creek
#1
Just a heads up. On the West end of Holmes Creek reservoir someone has cut a 3ft by 3ft square in the ice. It appears it has frozen back up nicely but I was not about to walk across it. It is visable right now but if we get a dusting of snow it could be a possible problem.

If I'd seen the stupid SOB that cut that hole, one of us woulda taken a thumpin, (most likely me 'cause I'm 70). I encountered the same thing on Cave Lake in eastern NV about 40 yrs. ago. It was covered up with a skiff of snow & when I went in, I went clear under. The worst part of my experience was that I had to walk about a mile and a half back to the car. Had my brother in law not been with me, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be here today. About all I can remember of the last half of the walk was wanting to stop & rest and him not letting me. Hypothermia had me in real serious trouble.

May have been the fire department. They practice rescue there, might check with them.

Not sure about the fishing, I was just going for a walk around the neighborhood but since I do ice fish decided to go check ice thickness. There was only one group fishing it this afternoon. Fished it last year and caught a few planter rainbows. The fire department does practice there, in fact I watched them do it last year practicing ice rescues. When they are finished they put orange cones and rope around the hole and the hole is cut in a more rectangular shape. This one was unmarked and it appeared people had fished it. Just hope it freezes hard tonight and no harm will come of it. Wondering if someone was to see the folks cutting that hole whether that would justify a call to the police-it could be considered an extremely dangerous situation?

Just a thought but a 3x3 hole doesn't seem big enough to practice a rescue mission. My guess it would be someone dark house spear fishing that doesn't know better. It would be hard to catch them because they are inside a tent the entire time.

[cool][#0000ff]There USED to be a FEW walleye in it, but never a large population. That little pond has gone through severe drawdowns and has been part of the Community Pond system for awhile (not now). [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I have not heard of any walleyes caught from there for several years. Ditto for any decent bass. In the "olden days" it used to be a favorite secret honey hole for multiple species...all of good size. It was especially good for ice fishing since it does not allow boats or float tubes and the best spots cannot be reached by bank tanglers.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]In short, it is always a pretty little pond to fish, but the quality and quantity of fish has dropped off a lot. Hopefully it will come back now that it is not on the trout and catfish dump list any more and will likely get less pressure.[/#0000ff]

I have been fishing there for the past 4 years and have never seen a walley, but i heard the same thing? I have seen some huge carp jumping in the summertime, and caught some very large crappie on the ice, catfish, white bass, largemouth, bluegill, slimers (planters). So I would say yes they might be in there? I just haven't targeted walleye there, sure do love Ice fishing there though. Starting next friday I will be there after work, every friday, love it. and glad to hear that it has finally iced over... Thanks

How come I can never find the misspelled words on the spell check?

I heard speculation that the hole was for a polar bear swim new years day.

Just a guess.

Well I went late this morn must of been 10:30. cought 10 nice trout. all went back in the hole. only one other angler out there he was doing better said he had already had 50. I was by the dam he was more north by a piont. Is nice there will have to give it another try. See if I can find something other than trout.
Oh seen a sign saying 4 fish limit. is this it or is it a 2 fish like the other [#000000]Community ponds?[/#000000]

[cool][#0000ff]It is no longer listed among the DWR Community Pond group. The limit is now 4...not 2.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Glad you had a good trip. Hope you can meet some of the other residents on future trips.[/#0000ff]

Thats a great pond for a close to home quickie. How thick is the ice? I would love to hit it this week if there is enough ice to hold my bod.[Wink]

Holmes Cr. Res. is no longer a community fishery and it is not listed in the "rules for specific waters" section of the 2011 Fishing Guidebook. Therefore, general bag and possession limits apply to Holmes Cr. Res. Refer to page 16 for further details on species specific bag and possession limits.

The sign you inquired about was likely an older, outdated sign that unfortunately hasn't been removed yet. At one time, the limit at community fisheries was 4 fish, prior to last years reduction to a 2 fish limit.

there was about 4-5" of ice most of which was that milky stuff.
So that 4 fish limit is an old sign? really hate to find some crappie or gills and keep more then 4 if I not aloud to.

Can I get a Hallelujah! That is some of the best fishing news I've heard in a long time. The next best would be if they stopped stocking slimers at East Canyon and put in some perch and walleye!

I can tell where your allegiance lies - and I COMMEND YOU FOR IT!

Sounds like it's had a history of being quite a varied fishery - if it weren't for all the roughing up and "controlled" environment. Maybe it'll get wild again.

Sounds like a fun little stop. Funny - they opened that one up, while I saw Wellsville pond went the other way, and is now a community pond. Though it was already stocked with frisky planter-bows.
