I have only fished Ririe at night one time while camping on the dock across from the boat ramp. we caught a whole bunch (maybe 10 in about 2 hrs) of small trout until my daughter accidentally kicked the rod in the lake. this was during the middle of the summer.

So would a guy fish at night the same as you would during the day?? Trolling ? Same bait , lures ? Maybe find them on the finder and jig?

I archery hunt across Pali. every year and we night fished a bunch this year. Bobbers are the trick for me. Sucker meat or minnows work best. I use a slip bobber like a steelhead set up, then you can keep changing the depth till ya find em.

I see a lot of guys do it at minadoka dam and watched them haul in fish after fish. they start about midnight and have a 24 to 26 foot pontoon boat they hang a bunch of green lights under it and from what i could see with binoculars they use minnows or rappalas. I would guess that tactic would work up there too the green lights attract the minnows and start a feeding frenzy

Never used green lights? Good idea though. Whats the artificial light laws state in the regs anyway?

well as of last year any lights are fine submerged or not. I know cause i didn't think what they were doing was legal but game warden said yup good way to catch fish. there was a green glow probably 25 foot around the boat

This is an interesting thread, and I'm surprised that placing lights in the water is legal, it seems to fit the legal definition of chumming.

I think it came down to enforcement and problems with interpretations. Was a lantern an attractant light, how about a car parked on the bank with headlights, maybe a campfire. If you eliminate the restriction you eliminate the need for budgeting for enforcement.

Seen stories of fall-night-fly-fishing for big browns on rivers. Using mouse, frog, - big patterns. Lost of protein as they bulk up for winter.
Catfishing is always popular at night. That's when the BIG lunkers seem to come out and play. Some fish are more geared for night vision - like the Walleye. Heard Crappie like the night hours too.
So if you're ice fishing, and your camera has an LED light to it - what then?! I can't see lights having any of the same issues or problems as chumming can introduce.
It's definitely a different feeling being on a water after dark. One of those times I like having the GPS if it's a bigger lake - so I don't have to navigate by the stars!
