Back from AZ
#1
We got back from visiting my son in AZ Saturday and had a great time. Went fishing at Saguaro and Bartlett lakes and managed to catch some bass. As usual, it was one of those should've been here last week kinda thing but I managed to catch some nice ones at Saguaro and caught a lot at Bartlett but nothing over 14". The main thing is I got my Bass Fix in, and the weather here is finally turning around.

BTW Ron, I did catch one 4 lb cat. [Smile]

This is a 3 lber out of Saguaro.

I caught most on my brown/purple jig w/twin tail grub and a few on shaky head jig w/watermelon candy worm.

The cat also took my jig.

[cool][#0000ff]Congrats on a good trip. I lived down in Chandler (suburb of Phoenix) for several years and fished both Saguaro and Bartlett a lot. Really miss it about this time of year. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Those bass in Saguaro get big and nasty. I was fishing out around the buoy line at Butcher Jones area one time when they planted some rainbows. The newly dumped hatchery pets schooled up and were swimming on the surface a short distance from shore. That rang the dinner bell for the bass and several HUGE largies started busting on those rainbows like yellowfin tuna on sardines. Monstrous boils. I did not have a big crank or plastic tied on and by the time I was geared up the bass had eaten or scattered the trout. Game over.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]There are some real toads in Saguaro. Here is a picture of a 17.5 pounder that was taken in February one year. (Not me in the picture. Too bad)[/#0000ff]

My son used to guide on Saguaro and caught some monsters but after the golden algae kill a few years back, the fishery is just starting to come back.

That is one nice bass.

[#0000ff][cool]Yeah, that algae kill was a killer...literally. My wife and I had been doing very well on yellow bass, largemouth, cats and even a few walleyes. One morning we launched and almost immediately noticed a foul smell in the air. And there were not even any carp jumping. Couldn't find any fish on sonar and didn't get a tap in 3 hours of fishing. Highly unusual for that lake.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]We cruised into the shallows and found the surface covered with little dead clams that had floated to the surface and were the source of the foul odor. That algae was the result of heavy nutrients and chemicals washing into the Salt River from the big fires of the year before. Lots of flame retardant and other chemicals...plus the ash and mud runoff.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]We moved back to Utah at the end of that summer and kept tabs on the poor fishing through friends and family left behind. Too Sad. [/#0000ff]

Welcome back. Glad you got some fishing in. I have been getting jealous at the reports coming back from Utah Lake, the lower snake r. and CJ Strike. I can't believe bass are biting already.

Anyway we need to get together this spring.

Good Grief! First Smartweed, and now Bassnbob is back. Every bass from Swan Fals to Hells canyon will have sore lips soon[cool]
Good to hear your back, but I didn't know you were gone[Wink]
My uncle has informed me we are going to Ohwyee Lake this spring. He is 88 and said he wants to put a hurt on crappie in Leslie Gulch. Ron
