Hello all,
A friend an I are planning to float the snake river down to Rose area in blackfoot. We are interested in putting in at Firth or Shelley. does anyone have reccomendations based on recent trips?
Any tips would be appreciated...we are going to launch a drift boat, hopefully next weekend.

There is a diversion dam at Firth that we won't take a jet boat over and I don't think you want to take a drift boat over . It is a good 4 to 5 foot drop. Between Shelley and Firth there are two small Diversions that I think you can get throught OK . There is a boat Ramp at North Bingham Park near Shelley and a take out ramp right below Firth Bridge . Most float fishing usually takes places in mid summer to later on in the Snake from Shelley down to the Railroad Bridge just outside Blackfoot where you can take out.
I would really think twice before floating it now with Spring melt just around the corner.
If the Feds decide to open up the water flow below Palasaides Dam it could mean dangerous float conditions. Just a caution to all of you eager-to-fish-open-water anglers. The Snake is a dangerous body of water. Every year we lose at least two to three persons and sometimes up to five to drowning. Mark my word--it will happen again this year! Most deaths are alcohol related and in the summer time. However,
I would stay away from high water and extra cold water temperature time like here real soon. Be a little more patient and let Spring melt occur and then the water drop and then GO FOR IT|!!!!!!

In the strech of river you are talking about there are two bid diversion Dams that I would not take any kind of a boat over . One is at Firth where the canal comes out of the rivers and the other is below the Porterville Bridge on Rose Road . These both have at least a 4' to 5' drop . Curt G.

The best way to float it would be from just below the Firth Diversion behind the school, down to the Rose boat dock just above the bridge. I have seen people float farther down, but you need 3 or more people to help pick up the toons and carry them over the diversions. This is not easy considering just before the diversion at Rose, the water is 10' deep or so right up untill you hit the concrete. That makes it tough to get off the toon before you go over. There are also many trees hanging on the diversion. If you do decide to go over it, stay to the west side of the river where the canal starts. You can get out easily over there and carry the toons across the canal bridge and down to the river below the diversion. It is a short walk and is part off the Green belt walkway.

Thanks for the tips everyone. We plan on pulling out before the blackfoot diversion at the boat launch in Rose.
If we put in after the firth diversion we should not encounter any diverstions right?
We might reconconsider doing this float because we are not very familiar with this part of the river.
Pervert I am familiar with the diversion you are talking about. I have tried fly fishing the spot before...only worms have worked...

Look at Google maps and you can see just about everything you need to see. There are a few other spots that are canal diversions, but they do not go all the way across the river. You can run a boat from Rose up to Firth. With the water being about normal right now, you should do good on browns.
I have done quite well down there fishing at times. Try stripping black leeches above the diversion, and nymphs below the diversion. I have taken the toon down there from Rose bridge quite a few times and just use the motor to go back up to the boat dock. The west side is quite shallow from the bridge down to about 150 yrds from the diversion. It is about 1 foot depending on water levels, but where it drops off is a good place to catch a few.
Good luck. Here is one I caught today.
