In light of the day at hand I should note that this is not an April fools joke.
I just got an email from the naturalist that works at Jordanelle Res. Since I know many of you frequent Rock Cliffs as I do, I thought that it is worth passing on. It may or may not affect your use of the Rock Cliffs area. An excerpt from the email;
"As part of the $3 million budget cut to State Parks, Jordanelle is losing the Naturalist position. The bad news is that I am the Naturalist at Jordanelle. The good news is that I still have a job it just won't be at Jordanelle. Beginning July 1, I will be working at Wasatch Mountain State Park in Midway as the Naturalist. The news is that Rock Cliff will mostly be closed beginning July 1, 11.
So what does this all mean? I don't know all the details yet but...
1. I will be working at Jordanelle and transitioning to Wasatch from now til June 30th. All the programs already scheduled will happen I.e. school programs, GSLBF, outreach, etc...
2. If you have been working on a project at Jordanelle with me I will continue to help you complete those projects. I.e. national trails day, eagle scouts, dedicated hunter, etc...
3. If you are planning on camping at Rock Cliff there will be some changes.
a. The south side of the area (across the river including the south pavilion) will not be open. This is mainly because there will not be any river work done this spring so when it floods we need to see what damage it does to campsites and utilities. After July 1st Jordanelle will not have the staff to take care of camping on the south side.
b. If you have reservations at the south pavilion, Emily will be calling you to move your group or give you a refund.
c. The Rock View campground will be open until June 30th. Most likely after July 1st there will be no camping at Rock Cliff unless funding is appropriated.
4. The Nature Center will be closed beginning July 1st. There will be no Jr. Ranger programs, campground walkabouts, or evening programs. The Star Party will still happen on July 22nd at Hailstone. The Watershed Festival will still happen on Sept 24th at Rock Cliff.
5. Day use will be allowed. Access to the boat ramp and river will remain open.
The entrance station will be staffed and there will be law enforcement presence along with maintenance people taking care of the grounds.
For updated information please call Hailstone at (435)649-9540. Or check the current conditions on our website at www.stateparks@utah.gov."
As the email notes, day use and boat launching (and hence fishing) will still be permitted, but other services will be cut. RC is a neat place. I am to see this happen.
