Prototype Flies

Heya guys,

I have been thinking of flies to tie for black bass on Mead. With the lead core shooting head system I use, I can get to the bottom pretty fast, even in fairly deep water. I also have been thinking of how to make a senko type fly to fish on a dry line. Here is what I came up with at my bench tonight. Just as a note... I am sure these flies exist have been tied somewhere, by someone before, I just haven't seen them. The main problem I've always had w/ rabbit strips is they foul so easily on the hook... I am hoping the "texas rigged" style strip with the lead eyes to make the hook ride upwards doesn't foul on the long tail. The other fly is simply a rabbit strip with a piece of heavy mono superglued to keep it stiff. The mono is purposely left shorter than the strip so the two ends will flutter.

The second fly is going to be "whacky rigged" to a hook tied to the fly leader and fished like a senko. Any weight added will be split shots on leader.

Gonna try'n get to Floyd Lamb sometime this week and give 'em a test. These are prototypes.. if I get some action on them, I'll definately tweak colors, eyes, etc.

[cool]I'm curious to know if they work. I've tied up some zonkers and double bunnies to try this spring. I also tied up an articulated fly yesterday. My first. I used white crosscut rabbit strips on both hooks as well as white bucktail on the back hook. Saw a guy using one on Fly Fish TV and he was getting spotted bass along with lmb. It looks like one that will work good at mead.

Hey BigE,

I used to tie bunches of articulated flies... specifically I tied one to imitate damselfly nymphs. After a couple of years of using them, I didn't find them any more productive than the fly I'd always used. It was much easier to tie so I went back to it.

Have you ever used any tube flies? Now that I am going for bass with the fly rod, I may have to give the articulated flies another chance, and probably gonna check out some tube flies as well. If ya don't mind throw up a pic of that articulated fly you tied. I may just tie a couple to have.

I am pretty sure that the first fly will catch fish IF the tail doesn't constantly foul on the hook. That is the prob I've always had trying to use long zonker strips. If it does then I have a second plan.

That is a nice looking fly there. Have you tested throwing it on your 6wt yet? I have a similar articulated leech pattern and it was a bear to throw with my 5wt once all that rabbit hair got wet. I have a 8 wt now so I can throw the bigger flies with more ease.

[cool]No I haven't got a chance to try it out yet. Probably in another week. I hope it works out ok on the 6wt. If not I'll take the 8wt out. I also tied up another one but in olive.

You have the hook going THROUGH the rabbit strip? Not sure the reason on that, but this fly has been around for awhile. It should work killer. Try Black and Purple.
Also maybe add a stinger hook.
If you are using lead dumb bell eyes, that should be all the weight you need.

Vegaskid it is a thrill to catch a fish on a fly you have tied yourself. I didn't know if you were interested but I recently, last few days actually... decided to see how hard it is to make a spinnerbait... I am a total rookie and all I use are pliers to bend the wire, but I'm hoping they might catch a fish ... here's the pic of the various lures I have been making. A couple are spinnerbaits, some inline spinners.. the one is just a spinner above a swimbait for trolling... bit of flash. I am gonna target the large/smallmouth bass with these, but also see if the striper fancy them. I find it almost as fun to create my fishing lures as I do fishing them...

it great to make your own lures and baits, i made some spoons and jigs out of actual spoons and butter knives i picked up at the thrift store for 10 to 25 cents each, then cut and bent them into strange shapes that make them flutter and shine, i used them last year i did pretty well on smaller stripers. then i lost em all snagging up on 4lb test lol. but less than a buck to make not a big loss.[fishin]

[cool]I did the spinner thing also. Bought the parts from Cabelas. They have a nice tackle craft catalog. Another way to do the spinnerbaits is to buy the wire and blade combo from Bass Pro and then attach what ever hook or jig combo you can think up. Experimentation is fun and rewarding when the fish bite on nothing but your fabricated lure.
