any trolling guru's out there? Im taking my old man and brother to the Gorge in about a month for a few days of trollin. Dont have downriggers so we are going to be using leadcore. My old man has always tied his lake troll directly to the leadcore. But talking to a gent at cabelas today, he suggested putting leader between the leadcore and the popgear. And thoughts on that setup? Also, we have trolled DC and the Berry, and i have fished for smallies at the Gorge, but we have never trolled it before. Any pointers for the bows? And i know its pretty tight lipped, but maybe a pointer for the kokes/

Don't need pop gear for the bows. Just put a leader onto your lead core, and attach a spoon. Fish the back of Sheep Creek Bay, Linwood Bay, or other creek mouths in the canyon. LOTS of boats will be out in another month.
PM Sockeyeslayer for the kokes. (go right to the top!)

You might want to search the Idaho forum. There was a REALLY good discussion recently on trolling - leadcore, downriggers, setups, speeds.
It was started with a question like yours, and some of the guys there put up some real nice detailed info.
I gotta get me a black box someday!

This time of year you can catch kokes on lead core pretty easily. Later in the year they go deeper than you could get with a lead core set up. To catch them go to sportsmans and find the rocky mtn tackle pretty much all there stuff works, some better than others at times but change up your colors untill you find what is working. Also I always use some kind of attractor, usually a dodger of some kind. Also wedding rings are pretty deadly. This time of year you should get a mixed bag of rainbows and kokes.

Pinks and Greens always seem hot, but pink squids especially. Buzz bombs too.
If you tie on a leader to the lead, you want to remove a titch of the lead so you've got a couple inches of just the thread wrap. Then you tie the leader to the leadless end. DON'T use a swivel here, or you can't reel the leader into the rod's line-loops.
One of the keys is finding their depth, and working back and forth through a school at that depth. Watch your finder, and try to pass just above the school (not below).
Pop gear inline can work, but also puts a lot of resistance on the line. Makes it hard to feel the fish sometimes.
