Just moved to central CA
#1
Hey guys, I just moved to Fresno, CA a couple weeks back. The California forum on here is DEAD. Anyways, I've been getting some tips from locals on where to fish here in the area, but I thought I throw a line out here and see if anyone had been down here fishing at all? Any inside information would be great! Thanks guys!

Sorry I can't help, but it seem like a bunch of the Utah forum people are familiar with that area, so you might try posting on the Utah forum too.

I will send you some info about the area. A lot of people are Salmon fishing in the ocean right now but Pine Flat and a few other lakes are close to where you are at. I have friends in Fresno and Clovis.

[cool][#0000ff]What kind of fishing do you like? Just about anything you want to try within an hour or two of Fresno.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]There are lots of small lakes along the foothills of the Sierras...From Sacramento to Bakersfield. Some have trout. Many have largemouth, smallmouth and spotted bass...as well as crappies, bluegills and catfish. These lakes are all reservoirs, with rivers above and below...and the rivers are usually good fishing too.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]If you are a backcountry kind of person, you can go up into the Sierras and pack back into golden trout country out of Cedar Grove. The Kings River drainage has lots of tributaries and lakes with browns, rainbows and goldens...depending upon altitude and management. I have spent many happy days on the trails up there.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Look north to the waters above Merced and Modesto...and South to Bakersfield too. The Kern River above Bakersfield is great for trout...above and below Lake Isabella. And that lake is superb for all the warm water species.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]If you wanna try for catfish and stripers go west to the Delta Mendota Canal...out by Firebaugh...an aquaduct coming out of the bay area. Bring lots of bug repellent.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]If you wanna get into salt water action head for the Oakland or San Francisco areas. Plenty of fishing both inside the bays and outside on the boats.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]But year round you are close to Pine Flat Dam and Millerton Lakes. Both great fishing...most of the time. Now you gotta Saddle up and go get acquainted with them.[/#0000ff]

Consider heading over to Port San Luis or Morro Bay on the coast. Couple of hours away from you. Party boats for lings and Albacore/Salmon trips abound. Shore fishing is spotty but Morro Bay has halibut on the tide and sharks/rays in the holes at low tide. (Big leopard sharks at night on a low tide) Great restaurants all over. Crowded with valley folks on weekends in many coastal places (Pismo Beach, Morro Bay) so weekdays are best. I'm a 12 year transplant but still have people down there that fish regularly. Many head for Idaho or NorCal in the fall to fish and hunt.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the info so much! At first, moving from Idaho to central California looked like the death of my fishing, but I'm realizing there is tons to be had around here!

The Sacramentdo/San Joaquin delta area has great largemouth, striper, sturgeon, catfish, and seasonal salmon fishing. Some years the Sacramento River gets more salmon than any river on the coast except the Columbia. The area around Rio Vista has become world renownd for huge Large Mouth Bass.
