Is that road paved and is it open this time of year?

could I pull a small aluminum boat to the lake from gunnison?

Haven't been there for years and years and want to go up and catch ice off.

The portion of that road above Joe's Valley is gravel and is not open for winter travel. It will be quite a while before there is any possibility of vehicle traffic over the higher elevations of the road. The highest point along the route is over 10,000 feet and I imagine there is at least 10 feet of snow still up there. So if you're going to try Joe's Valley you'll just have to drive around to Price and then down Highway 10 to Orangeville and then up the canyon from there. Good luck. You could probably haul your boat over Highway 29 about July 15th.

Thanks I figured that was the case but didn't know if it was maintained or paved over that pass, do you know if there is any open water up there right now?
The price paper is running some good stories of how and when from last week so I figured the ice might be coming off.

The last report I heard indicated that most of Joe's Valley is now ice free although there was still some ice floating in the middle of the lake. I know people have been fishing the shoreline for about two weeks. Good luck if you head over there.

no more ice on joes. i fished it in the wind last sunday. you could also head up the canyon from mount pleasant and down to huntington, then hwy 10 to hwy 29, then up to joes. maybe quicker than going all the way around.

The road from ephriam to JV has been improved to a compacted , widened , road base road which is a poor mans pavement. The section from skyline to grassy lake turn has not been improved , but is fine for most boats and trailors. They do not plow the road , and in most years is passible by mid june or so. This year is anybody's guess. There is a pesky snow drift that remains just off skyline as you drop off the joesvalley side. The forest service generally plows this drift to allow the sheepherders access over the top. (But not always) I would check with either the ferron or ephriam forest service before venturing over even into July (Due to the above mentioned snow drift area.) Nice drive though with a couple small lakes to hit along the way (petes hole , grassy )
