Monroe Community Pond now open!
#1
We had the Grand Opening of the Monroe Community Fishery yesterday. I've been working on the project as a volunteer since last fall and it finally came to be. I worked on the project with Mike Hadley of the Ut Division of Wildlife Resources. The Monroe City Hall staff and Maintenance Department did all of the paperwork and dirt work.
I was excited to see all the kids that were out yesterday. (4 of the 5 big fish prizes went to kids) Biggest fish was a tie, two identical 19", 2 lb 11 oz rainbows.
Regular scheduled stocking won't begin until next year due to the need for fish to be ordered nearly a year in advance. The initial State stocking was supplemented by Monroe City and several local businesses.
It was a great opener!

That's good news. Thanks for the time and effort you put in to make it happen. Now see what you can do to get one put in over the mountain to the west.

Hey Mike,
Our irrigation pond usually doesn't dry up since they expanded it a few years ago, so we were ripe for the attempt to get the designation as a Community Fishery. I helped get the DWR and the City talking to each other so the concerns were addressed and the project moved forward. I got sample aggreements from the DWR so the City could see what was needed and required to get the project going.
If you have a pond in your town that doesn't usually go dry, you may be able to get the designation. All you need is someone to kick the ball to get it rolling!

We don't have a year-round pond. We have a good stream, but we just have a run-off catch that dries up and a secondary water pond that gets emptied. At least the stream is good fishing all year.
