Anyone here brine (cure) their unused bait, i.e., anchovy, shad, sardines?
Essentially you take leftover bait from your last fishing trip and cure it in Kosher salt, laundry bluing, anise, and galic oil, mixing it in 24 oz of water, dropping your bait in a gallon size plastic bag or cooler and letting it cure a few days in the refrigerator or ice if curing in a cooler. There are also commercially available additives such as Pautzke Nectar.
This will firm up the bait, preserve it for several weeks and add color (bluing)/scent (anise, gralic oil) for better attraction. It also recycles caught or bought bait. Once it cures, you bag it and freeze it for future use. Suppose to be good for cut plugging.
I'm giving it try for this weedend fishing at Government Wash/Hole33.
By the way, if you are out that way tomorrow, I'll be fishing from a short yellow kayak. Give a wave and I'll come over for a visit.
