Carp, Idaho Falls Area
#1
I will be working in IF this summer and am wondering if any of you locals know where there are high concentations of carp. I am a avid bowfisherman and am looking for a place to go within a short driving distance from town. I shoot alot in AF Reservior but am looking for a place a little closer for an afternoon shoot or something.

The closest I can think of is the Blackfoot diversion pond. I've heard of carp right below the dam just above the sunnyside bridge but haven't been able to locate any there myself. Outside of those I think your best bet is blackfoot res. and good old American Falls. If there is any other closer locations I would love to hear them as well.

Closest spot I know of is Blackfoot res. Can be to poison creek launch in under an hour from IF. If you drive it like the locals do.

That can be pretty rough on tires. That road has the sharpest golfball size rocks in the state! [Image: scaredworried.gif]

ya know I keep hearing that but in taking prob 15 trips a fall for the last 5 years towing a 2 axel trailer with quads and doing it at a high rate of speed we have yet to get a flat yet on that stretch of road.

Are there boat restrictions on Blackfoot reservoir?

no restrictions. Road from bone is not a good idea for pulling boats/campers/ect...has eaten a LOT of tires!

Is there any sloughs on the snake say around the hydro dams in IF that contain carp?

There is but they were all posted after guys went in and shot the carp with arrows and left them rotting in the water. [Image: beaten.gif]

I took the Lincoln Creek road this past Saturday in an attempt to get to the Blackfoot Res. I got only 10 miles up the road before snow stopped me. I back tracked to the pole line road, to reservation road, to Lincoln Creek road to get to the res. Snow on the road and wet muck and huge drifts. Blackfoot Res. is still 90% covered by ice. Snow everywhere and the creeks are blasting chocolate. It doesn't look too good for the carp fest on the 21st.

Gem Lake has significant numbers of carp in it. I have caught several of them while bass fishing over the years. I've seen them in the main channel upstream of the marina area on both sides in shallows, and also just coming across them in other random spots. If you have a boat access is not an issue. It's also only 10 minutes from just about anywhere in town.

The bank access was locked up over carp being killed and left to rot at Gem Lake. If you shoot them please be responsible and remove the carcasses. Throwing them up on the banks or leaving them dead in the water is not cool.
