Night Fishing for Striper
#1
Hello guys,

My boy wants to go fishing on Saturday. I told him we could go but I am thinking of heading out in the evening and do some night fishing. The main reason I am doing this is to avoid the crowds that always hit Mead on holiday weekends. It's either that or drive a few hours up to a trout spot, which still will be busier than normal due to the 3 day weekend.

If I do Mead here's the plan. I was gonna go out in the evening and try to net some shad. Then find a spot and drop the green fishing light. I've had the thing for years, but only used it once. It did bring in the fish I have to admit. I was going to attach a chum bag to the bottom of the light. A couple of Toby's chum bombs should fill my little mesh bag nicely, then lower it to about 15ft. For bait I will use either netted live shad, or if that fails, then fresh anchovies from International Marketplace. This is the plan. If my little girl goes along then I won't even bring a rod for me, just try to get the kids catching fish.

Now to my question.. does anyone care to go along with me? My boat will be full already so I cannot take any more passengers, but if anyone has a boat and wants to get out and join me let me know. I have a spare light to lend if needed. It's not green, but it submerges. It'd be nice if a few people with boats went. The more lights the better. Also, the moon should be almost dark so it's supposedly the best time to use the lights... though I am not an expert on the matter.

Two spots come to mind... Gov wash area and also the tires off of any marina... Both would be an easy paddle and/or kick in a kayak or float tube. If no one is interested I'll probably drive to a trout lake where I know I can put the kids onto some fish.

Let me know what you think guys,

On memorial day weekend or any other major holiday its best to have a positive attitude and focus on your own actions since thats all we can control.

I'm guessing everybody and their dead grandpa will be tied up around the tires at night and scattered throughout the wash. You should be able to carve yourself a nice little spot among the rest. Your plan sounds dandy I would just recommend more chovies and a high wattage spotlight. Chum is key to night success. Enjoy[cool]

I planned on hitting the lake sometime this weekend. I would for sure hang out with you but I have no boat, and do all my fishing from shore.

My only concern this weekend was a weather report I watched last night. It said Saturday and Sunday was going to be very windy. Something about a storm coming down from the north, and 40 mpg wind gusts.

Heya Jimboslice,

I had noticed that as well. If it's blowing hard no way I'll take my kids out. Ask Ben... we have cancelled at least one trip due to wind. Sometimes the weather report is wrong('specially when it comes to the wind) however and I play it by ear.

I wouldn't mind shore fishing for carp either, but I'm not sure how much available real estate their will be on the shoreline. I was going night fishing to avoid the jet skiers and ski boats.

Heya guys,

I have decided not to go fishing afterall. I just filled up the wifes' car and I saw three different trailer with jet skis gassin' up. I live just about as far from the lake as possible and still live in Vegas. If there's that many getting ready here, I can only imagine how many folks are getting ready closer to the lake. Totally made me not want to fish Mead at all this weekend.

Yep, with the economy the way it is, Mead is a cheap date. From now to October there will be bunches of people, boaters and jetskiers taking up real estate, making waves and being general A-holes.

Mead during the winter is nice and solitude. But the striper are harder to find. I agree that night fishing will be the way to go. I just bought a stern navigation light for the kayak so I can go out at night later this summer.

oh thats not all, i work right on Decatur blvd by 95 and there was a pretty steady parade of boats heading towards 95 all day, everything from huge party pontoons, bass boats, bayliners, and of course jet ski's. maybe a safe choice to avoid the lake this weekend. [fishon]

Weather report this morning around 10am said there was 25mph winds at Mead.

Also said that it will calm down around 7 mph by Monday which is when I'll be going.
