Box Car Cove 5/30
#1
I meet up with Willy7o2 (Will) around 5:30 am and launched the kayak at Box Car Cove. Will was with a friend, Tommy, who had a small pontoon boat with a trolling motor.

We headed out to the first point and fished for awhile with no luck. Then Will and Tommy wanted to head out further with me paddling behind ending up at the northwest corner of Black island. There we saw a small boil but it was more like a burp. The shad bubbled for less than 30 seconds and were gone. Then came back up and then just as quickly disappeared. We tried to throw out lures or bait. Tommy hooked up on cut anchovy but wasn't able to set the hook. Then Will caught a nice size striper and later Tommy hooked a catfish. After that the bite was off.

We then moved back into some of the coves back toward Box Car. Tommy towed me behind his boat for a while. It was nice not having to paddle all the way back. We saw fish on the finder but nothing was biting. Will had to leave soon so we headed back to the first point at Box Car. There Will and Tommy hooked up with several dinks bottom fishing with anchovies. But no luck for me. However, I marked this spot on the GPS. We headed back to our vehicles where Will and Tommy packed up and left.

By this time it was 2 pm so I wolfed down some lunch and headed back to Dinkville. As a I arrived to the spot and lowered anchor, I was pushed 75 feet northeast off the spot by the time my anchor hit bottom at 55 feet. I dropped a two hook bottom rig with cut anchovy and immediately hooked up on the drop. I fought the fish but lost him before I could boat him. I dropped my line again and "bam" another hit. This time I had him and pulled up a 3 1/2-4 lber. He was hooked in the mouth and also fouled on the bottom hook in the gut so he wasn't getting off.

I rebaited and again a hit as my rig hit bottom. I pulled up another 3-4 lber. After that the bite was off so I packed up and left by 6 pm.

Here is a short video of the first fish. I thought my camera was on single shot mode and not video so its not great;

All in all it was a nice day for fishing with light winds and little boat traffic. There were some boatskiers and jetskis but for the most part they kept their distance.Wll and Tommy are great guys to fish with and I'm looking forward for more fishing with these capable anglers.
