I need a guide for Flaming Gorge
#1
I wanted to get my dad a guided trip at Flaming Gorge for a fathers day gift. Not on fathers day but some time around that period. I'm most interested in catching some big Macs. Which services do you guys recommend?

TarponJim knows his stuff - no doubt about it. He might be harder to get a booking with though.

I'd highly recommend fishley. (Ashley Bonsor - spelling?). He's great guy and just recently hooked into a 56lb laker out of Flaming Gorge!!!

If you would like to get a hold of him go to the Wyoming forum on Bigfishtackle and he is a moderator so his name should be at the top of the board.... you could also scroll down and find his post on the enormous laker he just caught.

I have never used a guide there but I also have never caught anything over 20 pounds.... I do have friends that go with Jim about 3 or 4 times a year and have seen many many photos of there's with macks over the 35 pound mark.. They tell me if you do what Jim tells you you will have a GREAT chance at a BIG Mack.....

If you planning on trolling I would suggest Steve Davis with http://www.trophyfishingguide.com/index.html Me and a couple buddies hired him last year and he put us on some nice fish. He only rigs for large fish so you’re not going to hit huge #’s but the fish are BIG!!! One other nice thing that he is willing to do is let you take your GPS. That way you can mark way points for future fishing trips. I learned more in four hours on his boat then I could have is ten years of fishing on my own.

oh man we need a popcorn emoticon!

try emailing (or PM'ing TarponJim, his BFT name) CPT Jim, on his website if you look at his schedule it shows him always booked, but some times people bail on his trips and he will let you know whats up

Isn't that the guy who gets flamed on here all the time for allowing clients to kill the large laker's that he trolls up for them? I remember seeing a picture of him at the cleaning station ripping the guts out of a pair of 30+ pounders for some clients. I know your post doesn't say if you harvested those big fish, so this rant isn't really aimed at you personally. I'm just saying the guy does have a reputation....

LARGE MAC'S AREN'T AN UNLIMITED RESCOURCE!!!

Go fish with Ashley Bonser or Cap't Jim Williams. They will teach you the ethics of laker fishing and you'll be a welcome part of Mac fishing community. Feel free to harvest a few little ones if you want, but don't ever kill Macs over 15lbs.

(Stepping off my soap box now....)

I’m somewhat new to the forum so I can’t say for sure. I work with Capt Steve’s brother in-law and he recommended him to me. But what I do know is that all fish caught on OUR trip are still swimming.

With him being a guide I agree with you that part of his job is to educate people on the proper method of catch and release but ultimately it is the client decision on if they want to harvest a legally caught fish. I for one am more than willing to keep some of the smaller 24” and under for the smoker, they are tasty!!!

You might be thinking of Ray Johnson. That guy is the ultimate [#000050]deleted[/#000050].
And I mean that in the most offensive way possible.
That guy wouldn't know ethics if he caught and released the state record ethic.

You're right....R.J. is a [#400080]deleted[/#400080] by every definition of the word, what with the self-taken video's of him catching large lakers on rediculously undersized tackle, and taking FAR to long to land and release said fish...And that's just the beginning of his [#000050]deleted[/#000050].

However, in my previous post, I know exactly who I'm calling out. There are many others here who would agree with me. The guy seems to get some kick out of sending his clients up the boat ramp to the cleaning station with a couple of 30-40 year old fish. Karma will have her way......

I’d like to make a full and complete retraction on my first post. I had no idea that his fishing morals were in the gutter. After read past posts for the last hour or so it sounds like you speak the truth. I just feel bad that I put $450.00 in the pocket of a trophy killer.[Image: sad.gif] SORRY ALL!!! At least I got all of his GPS way points.[laugh]

Why would a man that makes his living on catching big fish want to hurt his own business by taking them out of the system????[crazy]

but then read post # 15 and 16, it seems Capt Steve's name is cleared. they were talking about a guide named Ray Johnson, not Capt Steve. Are they the same team or something?
