New(ish) to fishing

Hey sorry if this is posted in the wrong area.
My grand father passed away a few months ago and something we always did together was fishing.
I used to fish a lot more when I was younger. Always used others gear and never really knew what to use. Now i have 4 of my grandfathers fishing poles. a few I think are for the ocean and at least one is for freshwater. but I want to start getting into it because fishing is something I've always loved to do.
all I have is four polls.
Can anyone recommend a good reasonably prices starter tackle box for lake and river fishing?
Or let me know the basics on what to buy as far as hooks and bait and other tackle supplies. Im not looking to jump right into the sport and get all crazy with tackle and stuff. right now im looking to go out and relax on the river or lake side with some beers and my brothers, shoot the sh*t and hopefully catch some fish.
I want to be prepared with my own basic equipment for if a time comes where im invited on fishing trips or if i want to just go out by myself and relax.
im not trying to buy a cheap box of crap but i dont want to get too expensive either.
thanks ahead of time for any advice. and links to a website so i can read and compare and learn will be appreciated too.

To save you time and money, you should tell us what fish you want to go for. This will make it cheaper and simplier.Bass,Trout, Bluegill ect. Same for the saltwater.

That's a pro tip. Also, don't be surprised if, you intend on targeting various types of fish, if we don't recommend a lot of different stuff to you. Depending on what you intend to fish for, and how, will determine the best gear for the job. There is no such thing as a end all/ do all rod. [cool]

haha sorry. I didn't think to put in that important piece of information. I looked in my area and the fish we have here in kern river and lake isabella ca is large/small mouth bass. trout. catfish. crappie. sucker fish. kokanee salmon. carp. and bluegrill.

Id like to catch the bigger fish if possible. and definately the bass. catfish would be awesome. the only fish ive ever eaten are salmon, catfish, and frozen fish sticks that i can remember the names of. Ive been on fishing trips with my grandpa and family and eaten what we caught for dinner that night on the lake but i just dont remember what the name of the fish was. tasted great. it was up at lake shasta.
so anyway id like to catch what ever. Id just like to take home the tasty ones

[ol][li]first come the weight class of rod. many times the weight class of the rod is stamped on the rod, otherwise you have to look it up. The best way to know what your rod is rated for is to see what line specifications are suggested for the rod. "pick a reel to match"[/li]
[ul][li]feather or ultra light for breem gills perch trout, mostly pan sized fish[/li][li]medium class for all the above up to bass and others under 10-12 pounds[/li][li]then you start getting in to rods that are spicificaly rated by the pound[/li][li]Then there is the ugly stick used for towing your buddies truck out of the lake when he forgets wich geer he put it in when pulling the boat off of the ramp.[laugh][/li][/ul][li]there are fast medium and slow action rods.[/li]
[ul][li]What this is or means is the movement the rod takes when a fish strikes you lure.[/li][li]Fast means the limper the rod will be or more it will bend wheh the fish strikes[/li][li]medium is far less than fast [/li][li]slow is almost no movement, you just see a little tug.[/li]
[ul][li]to know if your rod is fast or slow, hold it up by the handle and wave it around like a sword, if it bows back and forth, it is fats, if it bends a little it is medium, if it bends little or not at all it is slow action. [/li][li]Choice of Fast Medium and Slow Acton of the rods is governed by anglers personal prefferacne.[/li][/ul][/ul][/ol]

knowing this info will greatly enhance your fishing experiance.

Dave T makes a good point. For a starter bass rod I'd get a med. with a fast tip so when you use smaller lures, you won't rip the trebles out of their mouth. A 7ft one pc rod should work well. I like 8 lb braided line for those fish as well. I'm a long time shimano fan, but many companys make quality equipment. 2500 series on the reel should do you well. Not a cat fish fisherman, so I'll pass that along to the other guys.

went down to the local bait shop and they gave me tons of usefull information and i think i got the ball rollin. They steered me in the right direction for fishing in the acueduct (wich is where i went fishing the other day). didnt catch anything though. not even a bite. but neither did the other fisherman around. i guess they just werent bitin that day. i asked other fisherman what bait they were using and they had chicken liver. i was using sardines and i think they were sandworms???
right now im sticking to the aqueduct for a few times because its so close. but in a few weeks im gonna make a trip to lake isabella and try to maybe fish for some bass. ive done a little researching and think i know what kind of tackle and bait i need to fish for bass. i just dont have a boat but will still be fun as always.
any suggestions?

I have caught many a bass with out a boat right off shore, and if there is a place where you can wade in on a hot day, thats even better..
