Gnarly at Da Gnolls 6-10-11
#1
[cool][#0000ff]Had a semi floatilla at the Knolls this morning. I had made plans with Waljustia to meet up early and expected to see others. We did and we did. But no sheep today. I wonder if they miss me.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I was there first and launched about 6:30 am. Calm with air temp about 45 and water temp 62. Water kinda clean green. Looked good. Was good.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Waljustia drove up and launched about 7 ish. I had just started catching the early whities. Kept dragging a minnow on one rod and throwing a 4" plastic on the other. Those silly little white bass beat up on the walleye plastic and a few even got their mouths around the 4/0 hook. Silly whities.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Had a good sized fish hit the large plastic early. I'm gonna pretend it was a walleye. Didn't get to see it so it could have been anything I want it to be. But it was inexperienced and didn't know how to hang on all the way to the net.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]No hits on catfish until I left the shoreline and kicked out into deeper water. 10 feet deep. Too deep for cats this time of year. Right? Wrong. Got the first one on a red and chartreuse jig being vertical jigged for the white bass going through on the sonar screen. Then, while I was unhooking that one my minnow rod bounced and line went streaming out off the reel on that one. It was another nice kitty. Almost a double.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Met up with a young man in a Kayak, with a giant ferocious dog (see pic). He recognized me but I did not know him since he does not post. LURKER JASON. He wanted to score a bunch of white bass for a family thing. I pointed him to a spot that is usually money this time of year. It was. He came back by later with two stringers of white bass and a big Smile. His dog seemed happy about it too.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I caught a few more cats and Waljustia still had not had an inquiry on his bait rod. He admitted that his minnows and carp meat were veterans of many moons in the freezer and that there was some freezer burn on some of it. He strongly resisted but I forced him to accept some fresher minnows and some white bass meat I had prepared at home. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Slow start but a fast finish. He ended up with a limit of kitties and several more released. Ditto for me. Wish I could say ditto to the 22" walleye he also scored...on a small jig...vertical jigged at middepth in about 12 feet of water. Just how I ALWAYS fish for walleye.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]We both caught a eatin' batch of white bass and quite a few kitties. Amazingly, we each caught lots of cats on the small plastic jigs we were fishing for white bass while soaking a minnow or white bass meat on our other rods. In fact, I caught at least six more cats on plastics after I had put up the bait rod and concentrated on working the shorelne. The water temp climbed over 65 degrees about noon and there were suddenly cats, whities and carp where none had been earlier. Oh yeah, I caught one big "dorsal diner" carp to fillet into future kitty treats.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]On the way back in I met Panfisher...workin' in out in his new toon. He said they had done well on the white bass off the point. Also saw Pa and his number one grandson...Brownking...headed toward the point. Hope they got into some fish. The water was laying down and turning to glass as we left.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Met a wading angler close to our launch spot as we came in. Donated a couple of my RC Killer jigs and watched him add several nice whities to his basket on those jigs before we departed.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]All in all a great day on the water with a good friend and fishing buddy. You do good work Dave.[/#0000ff]

Excellent report as always.

That sparkle red head seems to be good to you as does the pony head version you fab up. Is that body you use custom as well or a standard sparkle tube with a chartreuse tail?

What a great day fishing! Silly kitties, scared of the wind, run and hide in the DEEP water. Don't worry, TubeDude will find you still! You can run, but you can't hide!
Today was a blast catching those kitties on the tiny white bass rod tandem rig. I have to admit. If I wasn't there fishing with you, I likely would have went home skunked. That's quite the fishing buddy making the difference between a limit of kitties, some whites, and a Walleye... Or, go home skunked (well, for the kitties anyway, I could have caught a white bass all by myself). I would have never caught the walleye if I didn't look over and see you catch a kitty vertical jigging right in front of the tube.
It looked like a lot of fun to me, so I copy-cat'd (Hee Hee) Summer kitties on a winter pole is a lot of fun.

Thanks again for another trip of beauty! I always just kind of shake my head when I fish with you. I keep thinking I have things figured out, then I just get a new level of education each time we go out.

That walleye had a very empty tummy, was probably really excited to see my jig. Made some Beautiful 1" fillets off him though for my tummy!

I think everyone out there today was out there on account of your sharing of some good spots/ technique/tinkering and tackle. It's a cool thing to see the knowledge spread out like that. Well, except for me.. it kind of bounces off.. [cool]

Drat! I somehow allowed myself to become entangled in some responsibilities that are dragging on and on.... and on...might not be able to get out there until monday or tuesday.....

Nice going, though....really want to figure out my catfish slump..

[cool][#0000ff]There are quite a few places that you can buy the plastic tails...if they can keep them in stock. Cabelas, Sportsmans and Fish Tech handle them. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]You want to look for the Southern Pro Lil Hustler with scent...red scale top and chartreuse tail. They come in both 1 1/2" and 2". We also did well today on the bronze and chartreuse. Caught several kitties, white bass and THE walleye all on the "bronze bomber".[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]You might have trouble finding the red glitter heads. But I know a guy that makes them.[/#0000ff]

[cool][#0000ff]Methinks ye are too modest Davey boy. You do a fine job by your ownself. But I do take some credit for doping out the depth situation today. Who woulda thunk that spawn-time kitties would be out in 11 to 12 feet of water? Glad we accidented into them. Made for a much better day.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]But, as you recall, you were still catching them out in the deeper water while I was picking them up right next to shore on the little jigs. They are either really spread out or really Confused...like us.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]You know I only go fishing so that I can fabricate exotic reports. I really don't like fishing all that much.[/#0000ff]

Heck I like just holding the rod. I've always been a fanatical rod holder my whole life. My second favorite thing is getting my feet wet, with or without wearing shoes. Wet feet always put me in a good mood.
Third is seeing jet skiers and annoying boaters go by and sending waves up to the bank, or even rocking my inflatable boat, weeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
Fourth is dodging dear flies and mosquitos.
Last but not least is getting snags, you gotta love it baby.

[cool][#0000ff]Have you ever considered joining Masochists Anonymous? That's where you go get drunk and nobody else knows you...and you take turns punching each other out. They have a great 12 slap program.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Just about as much fun as fishing on a busy day at Pineview.[/#0000ff]

What a difference a day makes - not to mention a knowledgeable, experienced fisher person vs . . . weeeeeaaaaalll.

I had an errand down south on Saturday, so took your suggestion and hit Linden Harbor. With the great directions, and maps, and documents you've shared - I at least felt like I wasn't going in empty handed. First time on a new lake, didn't expect much, but hoped to at least find some busy white-bass.
Welp - there's always hoping anyway! Sure wish I lived closer - that's a purdy dang big body of water there! Busy harbor, but that may be in part that other harbors are flooded. Sure lots of the partay crowd coming and going.

Worked around the harbor for a while, then hit the reeds to the north. Saw some bass-boat anglers, so thought I'd try mimicry. Bait under bobber, pitched plastics, even threw some cranks. Couple bumps, but no hookups. Worked along the shore north, and while bouncing a reaper through the reeds - my bobber went Dive-O. Hooked up one of them nice cookie cutters, but he was a clever one - wrapped himself around some reeds, flipped me the fin, and broke off (I'm blaming the fish THIS time!).
So - just imaging this shot of the Timp with a big fat cat in front. I do!

Got windy, battery running low, gas motor wouldn't fire - time to head for harbor. Some bank-tanglers at the end of the harbor dike seemed amazed at my planer board. Unfortunately the Walleye weren't so impressed!

Tooled the harbor before heading out. Some punk kid was pitching rocks off a dock. Next thing - I hear this 'plunk' against the side of my boat! Good thing he didn't have a better arm or it mighta hit me! I offered to pitch a hook back to him! I was amazed - his dad barely even reprimanded him, nor apologized for his idiot offspring! Hit one of them fancy ski boats and they'd be fists-a-flying! I did hook up a big fat nasty carp, so it's almost like not getting skunked. Beautiful day to be out.

To make myself feel better - I dragged my boy out Sunday to our local stomp, and brought home a half-of-a-half dozen kitties. Tops at 5lbs. Missed about as many hookups. But I got me some weekend fillets in any case!

One question - when are they going to "finish" the road construction?

Maybe before they do I can get your HGS to come down with me and give it another try. Me thinks it calls for a camp over.

[cool][#0000ff]Glad you got out...and had some action. Sorry it wasn't better. TIMING is important. I went today (see report later) and got about 10 cats, a crappie and over 50 white bass. But...I been there done that before and I know it a wee bit better than a first timer. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]There has been construction going on down there for years but this time it is part of the big I-15 "Core Project". They are doing a major rebuild on the freeway through Utah County and that includes replacing some overpasses, etc.[/#0000ff]
