Utah Lake -Lindon area 6-11-11
#1
N.E.T.O. and I gave Utah Lake a try today. We each caught three different species of fish, but the catching wasn't nearly as good as I had hoped. Water temperature was 63 when we arrived and it got up over 73. I have never gotten snagged so much while fishing Utah Lake (other than on Bird Island). With the water being so high it seems there is lure-grabbing vegetation on the bottom every where. We had one frustrating experience. While we were fishing the water treatment outflow area a boat came up and anchored no more than 60 feet from us and started fishing the same small hole we were fishing. We hung around for a few minutes and decided to move on (the catching was non-existent anyway). I pulled a TD and snapped a couple pictures of them, so I might as well post them on here.

White bass, mud cats and channel cats. Total of all fish caught by both of us combined around 10 fish. Pretty pathetic anglers.[frown] We needed you there to show us how it is done.

Not too bad. This high water has me Confused. All bets are off until the water goes down a bit, then we can figure them out[Wink]. Ivan and I may give it a go tomorrow, I will post how we do.

That's too funny Kent. I would say you have exacted your revenge.

You might have gone by us today as I took the kids to Lindon this afternoon. Their interests were not exactly locked into fishing, but we caught a stringer full of chunky gills for dinner and this fish also decided to visit the barbie pole.

Hey kent don't get to frustrated when people roll up close to you at u/l I used to lose sleep over it, people will literally get so close to you they will bump your shoulder.looks like he gave you enough room to cast lol....everyone has been waiting for some warm weather and now that were getting it you'll see alot of people gathering in the popular areas!!!! Im just bringing this up because I've seen alot of people on this site are new to u/l. And there going to fish where they see outhers fishing or here fishing is good in a certain area.... but when its all said and done if someone is allready fishing in that area give them some space!! That being said I caught 6 different species around lincon yesterday, the biggest was a 15lb+ channel .

[#0000ff]Too bad about the "social" boater. Serves you right though. You should know better than to fish in his hole.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]I enjoy taking pictures of guys like that. About the only therapy you can get out of the experience. I usually wait until they are looking before I shoot. Just love it when they ask "Why are you taking my picture". I reply "I am a photographer for [#ff0000]EXPLETIVES[/#ff0000] OF AMERICA. I figured you might qualify for the cover pic this month."[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Based upon the experience at the Knolls on Friday I am guessing that you might have got more kitties in deeper water. But, with the temps coming up there should have been more fish shallow too. Who knows?[/#0000ff]

We tried slow drifting out in 10 to 12.5 feet of water for awhile without success; however, I had no idea where to try on that end of the lake and somewhere else in deeper water may have been great fishing.

[cool][#0000ff]My bet is that there will be more fish in shallower habitat for the next few months than there will be in deeper water. But it is always the same old story. You gotta find 'em to catch 'em. And finding them is no guarantee you will catch them That's fishing.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Did I say shallower water? Hmmm...wonder when that will be.[/#0000ff]

You're braver than I am, TD. Seems like people always want to actually come fight me, even when I ask nicely. Must be cause I'm skinny. I don't mind fighting, but I hate getting into fights...

BTW, kentofnsl, what is that cute little bronze crankbait you have in the first pics.

Huh? I don't see any lures (definitely none of mine) in either of my two photos.

Sorry to hear that you didn't find more of what you may have hoped, but it's good to hear that you got out. I'm not sure if high numbers are due to fishing prowess, or luck or something in between! I've enjoyed a variety of species in the trips I've gone to UL this Spring as well, but I'm still hoping for a gangbusters days as yet either.

I watch the weather and I keep wondering if the oft said comment is a myth - a report that starts like "In a galaxy far far away, where fishing is best after a few calm days!" [:p]

I hope to get out again this week. "Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi!" [Wink]

C'mon Pat, you're killin' me! It's a good thing that "deeper" and "shallower" are less than a couple feet apart. [Wink]

It is good to see that the weather and changing water conditions doesn't seem to discourage good fisherman. Incidentally, I can remember when you and I would have been excited to have caught 10 fish. Remember our early experiences many years ago when we were trying to figure out how to catch the walleye there?

I was thinking about trying Utah Lake this week. After your report I may go somewhere else.

Is his registration past due?
Looks like a 2010 sticker to me. Maybe the picture is old.

Even though the catching was rather slow, I thought our trip was excellent. I hadn't caught any of those species yet so far this year, so I was able to increase my 2011 game count by a few species. I'm up to 11 species for the 2011 year so far. The conditions were optimal..no wind and warm weather. Very relaxing. In fact, it was a little bit too relaxing. I think I nodded off at least twice during the day. That trip was exactly what I needed!
Kents boat ran great the whole day and when we stopped to fill up on the way home, found that the gas tank was still 100% full. After a little investigative work, we found that the big motor had been running on the remote tank all day and we didn't even know it!

I've always struggled on Utah Lake, so the trip and the fish count/species count actually exceeded my expectations, although it would have been fun to find a school of white bass to play with for a while!

Thanks Kent for great trip!

I used to N.ot have E.nough T.ime O.ff to go fishing.  Then I retired.  Now I have less time than I had before. Sheesh.

It depends on which month it was registered. Used to be that all watercraft was April to April. The DMV changed it so that now it is registered in the month it was bought, and it is good for one year. My boat is June 'til June. My 2010 sticker is good for the rest of the month. If you buy a boat in December it will have stickers that are always almost a year off.
