I have fished for trout my whole life. I know all about spinners and powerbait and popgear and worms. But am looking to broaden my fishing species and techniques. I hear a lot about dropshot rigs but don't know what they are. Could someone explain what they are and how to fish them? Thanks.

Credit goes to TubeDude for this from a write up of his that I was lookin' over myself just today!
"Drop shotting was developed for catching finicky bass in deeper water…either by casting or with a vertical presentation. The rig consists of a weight on the end of the line and a short dropper 12” to 24” above the bottom weight. You attach a sharp hook to the dropper and add either natural bait or your favorite plastic lure.
The key to the effectiveness of the dropshot rig is that the weight holds the rig in one spot while you wiggle and jiggle the tip of your rod to make the bait or lure dance around enticingly. The weight maintains a tight connection so you readily feel even the lightest hits and can set the hook quickly."

I use it with two hooks about a foot apart. I hooked into a big fish last year at starvation (thinking it was a bass) that broke my line. I have had doubles on it too. Great method to catching fish. I usually put one of these out while I am fishing with another rod such as a spinner bait or something that is easier to cast. [cool] What is awesome is when you get fish on both lines and all hooks. Then the fun battle begins.

Do you tie your dropper on a three way swivel? How long is your dropper line?

i do use the three way swivel. I usually have the sinker about a foot below the first hook then the second hook is about a foot above that. I usually use two different colors of plastics so that I can see which is working the best. Also this type of rigging gets the fish in the different levels of water column as well. Sometimes I catch fish on the top and not the bottom and visa versa.

I know that feeling. Right now it is looking like two weeks before I can get out again.[frown]

I should double check my reading. The dropper line with the hook anywhere from 8" to 1 foot. I am thinking of trying the TD method of tying it to the main line with a barrel knot. See if that is any stronger then using the three way swivels.
